42" Akai Plasma as monitor question!

Okay, so I've got a 42" Plasma TV I wanna use for a PC screen. Itll mainly be for when I wanna go big for gamen.. but anyways. It has no dvi, it does have component, vga, and HDMI.. My thought was to use DVI on my PC to an covert it over to the HDMI correct? The max res the TV will display is 1024 by 768.. I was talking to a tech at my work and he spoke of a program that you can run on your PC an force the monitor to display a larger res then what it’ll allow of rjust such occasions, all you have to do then is adjust to fit the screen.. He no longer works there and I am programless.. anyone have a clue? I’d like to be able to go larger then just the 1024x768 on such a big screen. It’ll go up to 1080i, can’t do 1080p.

Powerstrip is what I used before. I wouldn't exactly recommend you forcing any higher resolutions, though, as it could ruin the display if done improperly.

It'll do 1080i, but it's worthless and you should use your monitor's native resolution when pushing through to an HDTV.

Does the image just look crummy if its forced higher on an HDTV? Btw thanks.

It kinda does, actually. Text isn't as clear until you force a higher refresh rate which could damage the set a lot faster than you want.

Try playing a game, max settings @ native resolution or the closest you can get; it's really not bad at all.

Of course, you can try what ya want! I've admittedly used Powerstrip with my old Samsung HD CRT to force 1080 and it never really did anything good for me.

I wouldn't use a plasma as a computer monitor. You WILL get burn in and ruin your TV. The only way you won't get burn in is if you set your brightness and contrast very low, and it will look very bad.

If you want to use a big TV for windows, use a LCD.

If you still want to do it.. I'd recommend setting a screen saver to 1 minute, and letting it kick on around every hour for a few minutes. However, you will still probably still get the taskbar burned in doing this.. probably in 2 months maybe less.

Most plasma manuals say do not leave a still image on the screen for more than 30 minutes, while 30 mins will not cause a burn in, overtime it will.

I returned my plasma after I got [Adult Swim] burned in the corner. This was at 25% contrast and brightness. The image was never on the screen for more than 15 minutes at a time. I had the TV for 4 months.

Bottom line, don't do it. You will regret hooking a plasma up to windows.
