Need some advice

Thread Starter
Hi,

Here is the rig I have:

Mobo: Foxconn P9657AA-8EKRS2H
CPU: E6700
RAM: Crucial 2x1GB 240-Pin DIMM PC2-6400 Unbuffered Non-ECC CL4
GPU: EvGA 8800GTS 320MB ACS3
PSU: Tagan 420W

Anyway, I'm looking to overcloc my CPU, not obscene but pretty decent. On stock fans I don't want to go past 3.2Ghz (stock is 2.66Ghz)

I don't know whether to get a huge heatsink or just a more convenient and easy to fit small one as I feel insecure having such a big heatsink mounted horizontally in my case.

Anyway if I was to get a small one I would get the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, are there any other small ones that are better?

If I was to get a large one it would be the Thermalright U120 Extreme or the tuniq tower. Any other recommendations? Which would be the easiest to fit.

Could you tell me what kind of overclocks I could be looking at with big heatsinks in comparison to the small ones. Thanks a lot.

Hi.

You might be able to run close to your desired clock speed with the stock cooler. Several members have achieved excellent results without spending money on a new HSF.

Try it before spending more, but keep a close eye on that Core temperature.

IMHO you have made a good choice with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro insofar as practicality in size, though I prefer the 120mm tower coolers.

As far as clock limitations, it depends upon the CPU, the ambient temp, the efficiency of your cooling, and the airflow through the case.

You should not have an issue getting 60-80% (guesstimate) OC with a large 120mm fan HSF... 1GHz and more is fairly common

Oh... sorry, the mobo will play a role, but I have no experience with Foxconn hardware.

the Ultra 120 Extreme should get you somewhere around 3.6-3.8 depending on the chip. if you dont feel comfortable with large coolers, you may want to think about watercooling. that is, if you have the money for it. will get you further than air too, obviously.
you shouldnt worry about the large coolers though. i have a GeminII, which is one of the biggest ever. PCB is much stronger than you might think.

How is the installation of the Thermalright U-120 extreme, is it fiddly. Will I have to remove my mobo? When I said I dont wanna go past 3.2Ghz, I meant that with stock cooling. I think I wanna get 3.6Ghz, do you think the AF Freezer 7 Pro will get me there?

For the first installation you will have to remove the mobo, but after that it's easy peasy.

So, on stock fan I have been running 3.2ghz and all I have changed is the FSB, however I have now reduced that to 3.0Ghz as I realised it was slightly to high for my liking lol.

Anyways can anyone tell what the difference will be in the clocks I can achieve with the E6700 between the Thermalight U120 Extreme and the AC Freezer 7 Pro
Thanks

Depends alot on your ambient room temps.
When I get a wild hair and it's not too hot outside, I give my X6800 1.7v and get crazy. Not often mind you, load temps are in the mid/high sixties
On my normal OC of 3.8 @ 1.53 Vcore, load temps are 53°c.
The Ultra eXtreme will allow you a higher OC.

That's a tough one... at least for me.

There are most likely members that are more obsessive/compulsive than I am that may have an answer that is based on more than just conjecture... that is all that I can give.

If you use a 120mm tower cooler that has a large cumulative surface area, and the contact between the HSF base and the IHS is uniform... and your ambient temp is below 30C... and your CPU is a good week... and you have sufficient airflow... and all the stars are aligned... then you should be able run with a 1GHz OC and still remain below 50C with a full load...

...so much speculation on my part

I ran stability tests @ 3.4GHz on my E6600 with a lapped Thermalright Ultra120 eXtreme, and didnt get very far because Windows was having issues (some driver conflict, not a hardware issue). But it never crossed the 50C threshold, though I did see it hit 50C a couple times, it never went above.
