Be gentle - Im very new!!

Hope you guys are nice to newbies as I'm very new to this!

So just built a new pc - all is well - mobo and cpu etc all brand new kit. OK the ram isnt a top make (4x1gb of Kingston value DDR2). But when I try and tweak the cpu a bit using Abit's utility, I get the blue screen of death (Im dragging the slide bar highlighted in the pic below to 300'ish) . Read somewhere that it may be a voltage issue - is this the V Core figure, and if so what should I have it at? Ive put it to 1.6 (it was 1.2 or something). Cant remember the voltage of my PSU but it was a pretty good £60 Antec one.

Do I need to do this through the Bios? - My bios has an abit overclocking function I think

Just no idea what Im doing - would love a pointer or two.

+1
And only overclock through the BIOS, DO NOT use software overclocking utils such as the one you are using
Also, 1.6v is WAY too high. Try and keep it under 1.5v to be on the safe side, and start at ~1.3 as suggested by h00chi3. Also the "C1E" option in BIOS is why you are only seeing a 6x multiplier when default is 9x. It will drop the multi. when computer is idle, best to turn this off when overclocking
Good luck! And keep the questions coming

What cooling do you have.

Thanks guys - impressive replies

I've done as you suggested and wow - no crashes!

Just gone to 290 at the moment (no laughing please) and put the vcore to 1.35 (lowest default option in bios)

Pic below - let me know if anything looks amiss.

h00chi3 - Re cooling have an Artic Freezer Pro on CPU and 3 internal case fans. Running in the low 40's so temps look good

How will I know when I go to far - will the Bios crash whreh I go to save?

Lookin' good elijahop
Keep going up!!
You should be able to hit 400fsb fairly easy, will probably have to up vcore and maybe the NB a bit though. Also your temps, are they load or idle? And what are you using to read them? I would suggest using Orhtos to load the processors and CoreTemp .94/.95 to read the temps, try and keep load temps under 55c.

No, you will either not boot, no system beeps, or you will get the windows loading screen and it will lock-up or you might get into windows and then it will lock/crash. The worst case is that the bios would not load/no system beeps in which case you will need to reset the CMOS and start back up at the last "safe" settings
Remember to run Orthos for a coupl of hours at least to make sure windows will cope with the OC if it errors either back down a bit on the FSB/mem timings or the voltages.
