Did L2 Cache makes that much difference??

My brother wants to build a new rigs
I'm thinking of buying a cheap AM2 mobo, maybe with VGA ob and use my X2 4600+ with L2 Cache 2x512 on it
The plan is to buy the $129.99 X2 5200 with L2 Cache 2x1024 for me

Q: Did L2 Cache (2x512 and 1x1024) makes that much difference?
If it doesn't, so I'll just have 3600+ or 3800+ for my brother

Need advice.. thx

512mb of cache equate to a performance increase of around 200mhz...

so for example, for a 2x512mb chip to be equal to a 2x1024mb chip it would have to run 400mhz faster

Meh I don't see much of a performance diffrence between my opteron 165@2.52 2x1mb L2 cache vs my x2 3600+@2.75 brisbane 2x512 L2 cache.

L2 cache on AMD doesn't matter that much because the latencies on it are lower than that of Intel. Intel make up for this by putting more on it. Thats why, on average, you see less performance increase going from 512k to 1m L2 on AMD.

2mb of L2 on C2D equates to around 300MHz performance difference, not sure how it goes for AMD

Most of the perks of a higher cache on an AMD are at higher loads!
