Help with Overclocking Q6600

Thread Starter
Good morning,
I have a Q6600, an ASUS P5K Deluxe, and a 2GB matching pair of Corsair XMS2 PC2-8500. I would like to get this thing up to 3.0Ghz on air, but I would like your suggestions or a link to the settings that someone else used, so I don't fry my PC. I have fiddled around with OCing a PC before, but only a little, and I don't really know what voltages to use.

The rest of the detail on my system is in my system profile. Thanks in advance for the help, Jon

meh. 60 is the max. they can handle even 80 or 90C but that decreases lifespan significantly, obviously.
if its not really hot right now, you might want to stick to 55, so you have a few C headroom.

I have that board and a Q6600 at 3.3 (415 x 8 if I remember correctly) on air, I will post the exact bios settings when I get home in about 2 hours.

Here are the settings I am running. Your system and chip may take a little tweaking since they are all different, but these setting should get you close. If you want to start at 405 instead of 415 FSB and work up, that may be a good idea as well to find you stable point. The NB strap does not occure on this board till 500MHz FSB, so you should not have to worry about it, or you can just set it manually. I am using a TR120 Extreme HSF, and I have no experience with yours, so I am not sure how your temps will be, but mine stay in the lower 60s folding 24/7.

Nice settings you shared.

I have mine at 3.2 CPU ratio at manual 9 with everthing else at Auto, transaction booster disabled/ clock over charging disabled.

Are you running your vcore on auto, and what does yours read? I get ~1.38 when I set it to 1.4 in the bios, but on my second P5K-Deluxe, it takes 1.42 to get the same 1.38. Seems odd to me for being the same board. The P5K3-Deluxe is different as well.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great advice; especially you Knitelife. I used your settings and OC'd her to 3.2GHz as you suggested, and everything is running great. All of my Vista scores are now 5.9 except for the stupid video card, which is still at 5.8; I guess I need to learn how to OC it too

With these settings, my CPU idles at 40c, but it went up to 66c during the Vista retest and during the 3DMark06 test, which is 7028.

One thing that is weird though is that Windows reports that my CPU is running at 3.6GHz and so does Core Temp v0.95; however, both AI-Suit and CPU-Z say that it is running at 3.2GHz, which I know to be correct.

Anyways, thanks again for your help, you made it very painless. I see that we have the same brand case Knitelife, but mine sucks; I didn't think about it at the time, but it sucks to have the PSU directly in front of the CPU. It is very limiting on which CPU fan I can use. I have been thinking about going water just for the heck of it; any suggestions in the low $100's. Would I be able to get it up to 4.0Ghz safely with water? Is 66c going to hurt my CPU?

Thanks again to all of you, Jon

Ok, I just ran one instance of Orthos (2 cores and memory), and I hit 70c in about two minutes, and then i stopped the program; I didn't dare start the second instance to max out the other cores. I even have the side of the case off, and a fan pointed sideways across the MB, as to not affect the motion of the CPU fan.

Why is mine so much hotter than yours???

I have my PSU facing so that the PSU fan is directly in front of the CPU fan, and they are pulling in different directions, so that may play a little part, but I'm guessing that, that isn't the cause since I have a Vornando blowing on the system.

Your thoughts guys???
