Thermalright HR-03 Sleeping with a Scythe Infinity??

Sorry to use such terms in the title, ... I'm lonely of late.

Anyway, so I've been researching VGA coolers for some time now ... bout a month or so.

I like the Iceberq 6 that I currently have; it keeps my vmod'd 7900GT a rather cool 45C at idle the majority of the time and never over 77C at max load (in a 26C ambient room) but since I'm wanting to keep this card for another year at least, I've been thinking of something better.

The obvious choices come to mind:

Zalman VF-900 = same temps as I've got
Thermaltake ND-1 = 1 - 2C better at most
Accelero S1 = to big to be actively cooled in my crowded case

...

So that's when it hits me:

For the absolute best air cooled VGA temps, I'll *have* to find some way to make a Thermalright HR-03, *actively cooled*, work with my crowded case:

...

...

But it won't work passive ... that'd put me in the temp range I'm currently seeing with my Iceberq 6.

So, upon seriously inspecting my current CPU cooler setup, I realize that my Scythe Infinity is jettisoning a rather large amount of air out of it's sides since I'm running two fans in a PUSH > < PUSH configuration.

Since I really don't have enough room to mount a fan on the HR-03, why not simply mount it so that it's on the Infinity side of my 7900GT and let the air shooting out of the sides of the Infinity add some active cooling?

...

...

Perhaps the air coming out of the sides of the Infinity will be too warm? Although, to the touch, it really doesn't feel warm at all.

But anyway, do you all think this would be worth checking out?

Considering the insane cooling abilities of the HR-03, and considering that the air coming out of the sides of the Infinity cooler is probably comparable (if not more) to a 92mm fan at 1500RPM ...

Do you think this would be worth trying?

Thanks for any input ...

(although I think I'm going to try it anyway )

that thing sits about 2.5-2.75 inches from the card be sure you have enough room prior to purchase. thats what i was thinking but my thermaltake blue orb 2 got in the way.

Hang on...your using a push push config on the infinity...you keeping your cpu form getting cooler temps...turn the fan on the left side to a pull..your cpu temps should go down..Now..you could also do a push pull configuration on the infinity but instead of having them as they are now with the fans on the sides...put them on the top and bottom, having the bottom one a pull fan so air is being pushed onto the hr-03.

This setup is three degrees better than the typical and traditional Push > Pull > setup ... trust me ... I tested configs for like a week.

The one thing I will say, though ... I turned my case's 'exhaust' fan around to be an intake and so room air is blowing straight into the first PUSH > fan ....

I've got a thread somewhere showing my tests for the Infinity fan configs ... PUSH > < PUSH PWN'd everything else. Go figure, eh?

Anyway, my main concern, as voiced by another poster ... is room for the HR-03 ... I'm sure I have enough horizontal room ... but my Northbridge cooler might conflict with it on the bottom ... not sure how far it hangs down towards the motherboard ...

..wow..thats weird..anyhoo thats ok then....but can you not move that component under the gpu lower so you can install the hr-03 the other way..also heres a pic so you can estimate how much space it will take up

I run my X1950pro passive with a HR-03 in a similar setup, only I have an Ultra 120, and the only airflow that gets to the HR-03 is from the case fans. See the link in my sig for pictures.

I would do that ... but I think my temps would be about the same as they are now ...

I'm running a volt modded card at a rather big overclock ...

If I were running stock volts and with stock overclock, then I think the passive option might work ... but I'm wanting to cut my current load of 77C or so down to about 65C or less and that's definitely going to take some air moving over the fins.

When my local shop has the cooler in stock (week or two) I'm going to pick it up and give it a try.

If it doesn't work out, I'll just have to eat the 15% restocking fee ...

If it works out then I'll post a blow-by-blow here ...
