I was trying to re-install windows, then I just reformatted the thing since it wasn't working and tried to load a new copy of windows onto a freshly formatted hard drive. I have 2 hard drives. 1 now is formatted, and the other has a copy of XP on it but it seems kinda buggy. I bought it as a "recertified" hard drive and it had some crap on it including XP.

Could there be a jumper or something I'm missing on the board maybe? It's just weird that it worked when I first put a copy of XP on it. Then windows locked that version down before I could install Vista and I haven't been able to get it to work right again. I'm not sure what could have changed. Seems like I've tried everything. Oh well, I'm getting a SATA DVD RW drive in on Tuesday, so I'm hoping that it will load everything up, hoping it's something with the JMicron controller that's screwing things up. I sure hope that's it.

Also, in the JMIcron setting in BIOS it's set to "IDE". I guess I could try some of the other settings. There's also a funny menu that I don't understand, with a bunch of letters/numbers like 2E-FGK or something, with about 5 different options. I don't know what that menu is for. Thanks all. Rep +'s when I get the time.
yea for some reason it sounds like its not able to read the boot sector on the CD-- so lets see - yea check one more time and make sure that the jumper on the back is in the right position-- and if you have a different cable try that - could be a faulty cable.

and then if that doesnt work- does your BIOS have an option for resetting it to default or optimal configuration? try those and then if still no luck maybe reset CMOS and then load default.
also under the devices section (i dont really know what your BIOS looks like so Im guessing a little) find the section for your CD drive where it dispalys a bunch of info about it - like transfer mode and all that and make sure its set to autodetect or whatever. so the BIOS detects the settings of the CD drive.

also is the hard drive with the copy of XP already on it connected to your computer as well? might as well disconnect that one while you try and install.
hope this helps.

THanks man.

I've hit the reset deafults option and there's no difference. I've tried a new cable and there's no difference. I have tried both a newly formatted hard drive and a hard drive with a copy of XP already on it, no difference.

Just pray for me, that when I get my SATA DVD drive on Mon. or Tues. that I can use a SATA port, disable JMicron and things will work I'm sure stumped on this one.

sorry to come into this thread without reading anything, but have you guys already asked if he's using a USB keyboard?

if you're just trying to run a CD boot disc, it won't always work with a USB keyboard because you have to "press any key..." and the USB ports might not be on at that moment. try it with a PS2 keyboard and see if it works.

hes not even getting to the part where it says "press any key..."
-before that can happen -- it pops up with "NTLDR is missing".

I'm just using a regular keyboard. I'm thinking I could probably get it to boot from a diskette, but I only have 1 drive, would have to switch between computer etc. I'll try that if using a SATA Cd-Rom doesn't help things. Thanks all.

oh, yeh i know that, i thought maybe F8 was a force command to boot from a CD or something. Although, it's trying to boot from the CD, it just won't load windows for some reason. I think it's looking for NTLDR on the hard drive or something instead of pulling it from the CD.
