Some polycarbonate questions - Page 2

Okay I am stealign my thread back j/k

I am getting ready to order my lexan soon but there is one thing bugging me and I am not sure of.

My case is going to be a cube (not a see through one if you are wondering) and I am not sure if 1/8" lexan is going to be strong enough for the base. I have no doubts it will be fine for the sides and top.

If you've got the money, build a frame out of angled aluminum, and use the lexan for the panels themselves. It should be ridiculously sturdy if you use two rivets at each place you want to attach a piece.

I wouldn't use 1/8" for the bottom, it will flex like crazy. 1/4" would be OK, but I would still reinforce it with something, like the angled aluminum mentioned.

the angled aluminum is a good idea and maybe even use an aluminum sheet on the bottom. Still researching materials and trying to find the best way to keep costs done.

1/8 inch thick. we cant even find any polycarb at home depot so i'm gonna stick with Lexan. can lexan score? what's the difference between Lexan and polycarbonate?

Lexan = GE's name for polycarbonate

to the OP: make sure you put some led's under the aluminum frame. it'll give whatever you put on the window a nice touch

Actually I am thinking of going with ABS plastic. I dont need the clarity of Lexan just a material that is easy to work with and fairly strong. I have found a good source for ABS sheeting and ABS L angle to construct the frame with. It will be very easy to bond the sheets and L angle together with them both being ABS. I got a sample set of ABS of various thickness coming so I can play around with it first. Now to find a good source for the perforated hex metal. I wish MNPC would sell 24" x 24" sections

Of course there will be plenty of lightage going on, so dont worry about that

Polycarb is good stuff, very strong and machinable and cuts beautifly on a bandsaw with a fine tooth blade. You can also get it from McMaster-Carr.

I love McMaster-Carr, they have everything! Never thought to look for plastic sheets from them
