ndiswrapper 1.47 on Ubuntu 7.04

Serious Linux noob here....the is the first time i've ever used terminal for anything....

Extracting ndiswrapper onto the desktop was easy, and I followed the instructions given on ndiswrapper's website as best I could, but here's what it said in termina after initiating the installl:

Here's the instructions I followed...could any1 simplify those instructions for me?


BTW, is it ok to be logged in as root during the entire installation? Or only when the instructions say so?

and please tell me, what does "You need a recent kernel at, least 2.6.6 or 2.4.26, with kernel headers" mean? What are kernel headers?? I believe my kernel was 2.6.2, is that ok??

Look at step 4. You obviously will need some form of internet connection to get the kernel headers. Type "uname -r" (no quotes) in the terminal to find out what kernel version you are using, or simply go to your /lib/firmware folder and look for your kernel version there. Make sure to run as fakeroot for the entirety of step 4.3.
If you lack any way of getting internet, then the easiest way will be to download the pre-compiled ndiswrapper package from the Ubuntu repos ( 2 packages, ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils). Beware, thought, because last time I checked the Ubuntu package had a bug.
