Sound Card worth it?

Thread Starter
I play counter strike source and my mouse (copperhead) broke. And im taking it back to circuit city tommorw. So i thought about just using my logitech mouse and getting a sound card. I use plantroniks headphones. So would i get much out of a sound card. I use onboard right now and have never bought a sound card. If you think a sound card would help alot can you suggest me one for under 70 dollars.

Also im preety sure i would need an agp one.

well... a soundcard will definitly improve audio quality thus making a great gaming experience, try looking for X-fi Xtreme Music.

and they come with PCI not AGP.
AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) is to be used with Graphic Card alone.

soundcards come in pci. agp is for graphics cards. your thinking of pci-e. they dont come in pci-e, but in the normal pci (the white slot).

imo, the biggest difference you would see is with the sound turned up high with speakers and using an x-fi or comparable card.

No, a sound card will offset processes from your processor giving you a bit more performance in games. And, yes, you will notice a difference in sound quality...crisper highs and not as muddy lows....but you'd have to have good speakers to totally notice this...with headphones...meh, they'd have to be high quality ones to notice much improvement. But you'd still get the performance increase from taking sound processes off the CPU.

And, no you aren't looking for an AGP sound card....regular PCI. Just don't get the X-fi ExtremeAudio and you will be fine. I'm not sure you will find an X-fi for under 70 dollars, but the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE card will fit into that range, give you a performance jump, better audio quality, and also cost you less than an X-fi.

Here is the link for those....

Otherwise, if you have a good 5.1 speaker setup and you play games, get the X-fi card.

HELL YES!!!! I used to always use onboard, but the X-Fi XtremeGamer really showed me the way. I don't even have expensive speakers (in the near future...) but I love this card. It's $75 at Circuit City I believe. Trust me, you won't regret it.
I went from Realtek HD Audio onboard to this, and BF2/2142 is like a whole new game. Music is much better too.
Another thing is that the X-Fis are supposedly great for mimicing positional audio using headphones. I hate headphones so I've never witnesses this myself, but I've always heard that it owned.
