HALF LIFE 2, mang!

Best game ever authored.

(seriously)

...

For what it's worth, though ... Half Life 1 is probably just as good ... but more so due to gameplay than graphics. Actually, at the time of it's release, the most revolutionary game ever produced.

You know those extreme facial close ups you see of some of the characters and cut scenes in FEAR? Wanna know where Sierra picked those up? Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 ... in that order.

You should own the entire Half Life series ... for posterity if for nothing else.

And don't forget about Counter-Strike: Source, which comes with HL2 if you buy it (I think).

One of the best online FPS shooters out there. Simply stunning.

Buying multiple Valve games is very cheap, so I'd just say get HL1 as well. It'll give you full support for the countless mods as well.
My favorite pack is the Source Premiere Pack. It has all the good games.

Half-Life 2 is very enjoyable and while it's not a graphical achievement by today's standards, there are some points that will seem pretty impressive. For me, HL2's best moments are in the chats with Alyx and the G-man (the two most high-detail characters in the game. Alyx's emotions are just COMPLETELY believable. She's easily the best female character in any recent video game.
