InformationWeek: LCD TVs Becoming Market Champion (DUH!) - Page 2

My 32" CRT is on the verge of dying. Ocassionally the picture becomes a single white streak through the center. It's a perfect excuse to buy the 47" I've been eyeing.

LCD tech is already superior to the other stuff, but you have to pay lots to get the good LCD tech. Most people just buy cheap stuff.

I find the CRT, LCD, and Plasma TVs at Costco quite disgusting.

I don't know why people still argue. Just Google if you must. CRTs still offer the best picture - pure blacks, color depth, clarity, etc.

I'm not saying LCDs don't offer an excellent picture. Of course they do. They also have plenty of benefits that people like - weigh less, give off less heat, take less power, etc. But that doesn't change the fact that CRTs still offer the best picture.

For more serious discussion about A/V, head over to avsform. Much greater depth there.

Ive had my 32" CRT for 11 years now. Going into first grade, now going into 12th. Only bad thing that happened was a couple years back when the damn power button snapped off. It kinda popped out of where it was supposed 2 be. So we had to get a remote or use a butter knife to turn it on.

I like my lcd, I got a pretty nice one and any other tech for the same size was far more expensive (as far as a flat tv goes). I live in a apartment that I wanna save as much space as I can in so a lcd was a great choice. Its only a few inches thick which takes close to no space to mount up. It also provides for a better view when sitting in the couch as you get a little more distance so it makes it look better (I think).

I dont have any complaints.

Enough said? No, not by a longshot. What you said isn't even a valid comparison. You're comparing old technology with newer, clearly superior technology. Of course the LCD will look better.

If you match everything to be even, a CRT will give you a better picture. Period. Pure blacks, larger color reproduction, greater color depth, etc.

LCDs are great but they still haven't matched CRTs.

You are correct...TECHNICALLY...about color depth and blacks. But, when you get to large screen CRT's (rear projectors) you will NEVER get the three guns aligned perfectly enough to see that depth. And if you are an alignment GOD, it will go out of alignment when the ambient temperature changes. How do I know this? I replaced a 57" Sony XBR rear projector with a Samsung LCD and this problem became painfully apparent. LCD's have NO allignment issues. And! They don't burn in. I had already replace one set of "guns" in my XBR due to burn in.

So, Yeah, if you are using a state of the art tube based CRT, with new phosphor and electronics, it will look stunning. But, go rear projector, forget it.
