Ok, a mini update time

Sanding the fan

You know those things which sound like a good idea, but it quickly turns out that they should have stayed as ideas? This is what happened with this one It doesn't look great and has only solved the problem a small amount, luckily I'm passing the fan on anyway so it doesn't bother me and it looks fine when its turned the other way round so you aren't looking directly at the sanded side, so its just another lesson learnt Talking of lessons learnt, it made me find out how to take apart and put back together a fan which may come in useful in the future Yeah, I'm clutching at straws, so what?!

That grill

Yes, that grill The black pictures:

Make that picture - its dark and my camera just ran out of battery.

Laptop DVD drive

Got this off a mate for free (hell of a mate ) and then I paid £3 ($6) for a convertor - Hong Kong based eBay shops rule!

Connected up:

The centre bit spins and is visible through the little window - nice touch but a bit useless The convertor connected up:

An expertly taken picture with plenty of light showing the placement of the drive:

You can see the mutilated USB ports to the left of the picture

Another picture of placement, different view:

And the current problem:

I'm going to file that out like I did for the parrallel port, could probably do that tomorrow if I get a chance Also theres the problem of mounting which I haven't yet sorted! As for the Zalman fan controller, thats easier to sort out - I've got a little bit of metal (woohoo for accurate descriptions). Its just a strip with two holes in it, yay!

Here's a spot the problem image for you:

First one to spot the problem gets the cookie!

Fan Controller

I had a Coolermaster Aerogate lying round - got it free from a different mate! Well, there's a story behind this one...I kinda broke the acrylic faceplate while installing it However, he applied for an RMA and they sent him out a replacement for free, so he gave it to me without a fee

Its a budget fan controller with some nice features. Here's it taken apart:

Blue!

Red!

Green!

And with the *slightly* (I love those little stars) plain front installed:

I got rid of the flaps on the side, one side it just snapped off WHILE I was cutting it with some spare to allow for mounting:

While the other side had the hacksaw treatment:

I lost two of the little seethrough bits which go around it, may just leave them like this:

For this coming up next will be a paint job - I'm seriously thinking about some of the red I used in Hellcat because of the contrast. The colour scheme will be silver and green, but I've always been a sucker for red

You'll also notice that there is a screw missing - no worries, as to mount it I'm just going to put bolts right the way through the acrylic side panel (which will have holes for the knobs of course) and then through the mounting holes. It'll be in the bottom front hand corner, basically opposite the DVD drive

Development Stage

As every modder knows, a mod goes through stages to find what works.

A grill which I decided not to use:

It was in my Photobucket so thought you might like to see

Cheers for all for any input, always appreciated

12th August...

Still to come: mounting the laptop DVD drive and fan controller, acrylic side panels, fibreglass or acrylic front panel, fitting for top panel (possibly hinged), and theres probably more (great)

Moving right along!

Hahaha... I love your sense of humor, and your good attitude... trust me, you will live longer and happier that way.

I kinda like that grill that you opted not to use. May I ask why you chose not to use it? ....just general curiosity.

+ for craftsmanship
+ for your positive attitude in the face of adversity.

Haha, woohoo for life advise in a mod log! Nah, it just makes things easier just in case.

The main problem was airflow and noise - the airflow was reduced slightly, I would put it at 60% - so no worse than a restrictive mesh. However, the noise was increased a lot, and I wasn't happy with the amount of noise the fan was putting on, even on lowest. The grill I'm replacing it with has 80% airfow, doesn't affect the noise and looks even better in RL than in the pics

Thank you for the smilies
