I'm here

Sorry for the lack of updates or activity - I haven't accessed the net since Wednesday due to the fact my ISP is [insert infraction here] *screws at ISP*
I'm posting from my grandparents computer at the moment.

Anyway, basically - I've been working all day on the case, so it's got somewhere Painted large amounts of stuff black (emo style, yeah yeah), but there's still a lot of work to be done tomorrow.

Onto the pictures First off a grabbed a piece of mesh I had lying round and cut a useable piece off it:

Its AcRyan HEXX mesh and is very nice, I like

That sheet is about 30cm long by 15cm high I think.

Next, I went shopping! And I enjoyed it! Found a local shop who, unlike everywhere else in this stupid country, have reasonable prices on clear plastic:

That 3 foot by 2 foot sheet (I think thats 90cm by 60cm but I'm not sure and don't really feel the need to work it out) cost me £11.50, and is 4mm thick

http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...t=DSC00006.jpg

Did you ask for roof:?

And according to the sheet, this is how I'm meant to cut it:

BTW, thats not how I did it - I used the biggest saw I could find and it worked good

I also needed some black spray paint for this and to do Madz stuff (if he still wants me to do it). My last one was Warhammer stuff (FTW! ) which pretty rubbish but did the job, so I'm proud to have some proper stuff now:

Even if it does make my fingers black.

If anyone is keeping up to date with Hellcat (which isn't hard as my last update was like a month ago and I never really did any proper work yet) this was the window a mate cut for me:

However, I overcut the window on the side panel so I decided to donate the acrylic to SFF as its easier to cut and stronger than the stuff I bought - perfect for the top.

Next thing I realised was that while I had several LEDs for HDD and power, and a switch for power too, I'd got rid of all the little connector thingys, so I called in a favour and picked one of these up:

Stripped it down and now its ready for use - the furthest wire to the right was removed, then working left the next two are for the power button and the next two for the power LED.

First thing to do was to remove and spray the nasty greyish base:

It isn't actually that funny colour on the left side, thats just a reflection - it is pretty glossy indeed

Back panel quickly marked up:

And some pictures of the right hand side cut out and drilled:

From a different angle:

No dodgy holes this time To keep the case accessible, I'm going to put the nuts for the screws in the bottom case of the half on the outside, and the ones in the top half on the inside - the ones on the bottom won't look that great, but otherwise it would be an amazing pain to get access to simple things, while the top ones can be easily accessed - I'll show you how soon

See what I mean? Thats the other side BTW, woohoo And please don't shout at me about the length of the bolts, they were all cut down along with most of the other bolts in the case.

Some more screws I found (down the back of the sofa this time)

The back cut out and marked up:

This has now been edited (LOL) - the plywood only goes down to halfway.

Now, it is soon Here is my completed plan for the top. First, drill some holes (to hide the explosives in obviously)

Have a tea break and admire the nice effect the clear coat has made on the base:

Back to work. Countersink said holes:

Rest of the plan is coming tomorrow Or maybe later if I feel kind.

Here are my bits ready for painting:

I'll get some pictures later, some need to be clear coated and others need the other side to be painted.

Anyway, I better be off. I'll try and get back on later and write out the long list of stuff which will be done tomorrow, and I may get some pictures of the case later when I go out to finish spraying.

Over and out - hopefully for not so long this time!

Sprayed the other side of the plywood, added a second coat to the fan controller front and clear coated the PSU bracket.

After looking over the clear coat which I'm using it appears its cellulose based, which explains the finish - the surface glints and gleams with little specks, and the fact that the paint + clear coat are probably reacting explains this. I like it though

it is starting to really come together!

Why plywood for the back? Also, why did you not use an ATX back plane from an old case? Just curious.

He's pretty much finised building this case now as the deadline has just passed. He's uploaded photos of it onto the competition forum but he must not have had chance to update the log here.

Look at bottom of the page:

PS: I want that green acrylic and steel grill!!!!!!!

It was a frantic weekend, but I got it done

Cheers for the comments, I need to get the worklog written up and all but I'll post up what I did on the last day - I've got a few pictures of what I did but they are on my phone and the lead is at my grandparents! doh.

I miss you guys too Oh, and you Syrillian Joking! No net still, but I'm at a net cafe posting it up. Getting the pictures in yesterday was hell - had to go over to my parent's work at 10.30pm and upload them. Not fun!

I have finished it for the moment

Here are some pictures:

Please ignore what look like bad edges, they've been filed and sanded but the flash makes them look wierd...

That picture shows it all

My secret plan for the top is also obvious - see here for more information:

A hinge The whole top hinges upwards - almost vertically, but not quite. There is plenty of space to get into the top half though, so it works nicely.

I'm still loving the grill, and glad I went with it. That stuff which looks like Bluetak is actually a silicone glue or something similar which dries transparent, although I'm trying to find some clips of some sort to replace it with. They won't be included in the competition entry but I think they are needed in the long run.

There is a shot of the grill and the power button (which I'm pleased to say that after I soldered and heatshrinked, etc late last night worked perfectly first time! Below that also is the LED which I heatshrinked better when I got back from uploading the pictures, at about 11.30pm so within the time limits That too worked perfectly first time and is blue

The mesh is inside the case and I doubled up some tape to stick it to the inside of the aluminium angle, and then cut holes in it for the LED and power switch - looks great The laptop DVD drive is also held in place by doubled up tapes - I used a lot so it's held down well and works great. I may paint the rails for it at some point but the blue doesn't look too bad really.

The hinge I was talking about:

All the bolts are countersunk...if anyone noticed anything, the acrylic used on top is thicker or clearer or something (it was a different type), which look good IRL and I hope in pictures too.

That's the back - in the bottom right corner I stuck some mesh in place to hide the gap, that was an offcut from the front.

In reply to nagal - it was simply because I didn't have a ATX motherboard back panel around, so I had to make my own. If I had had one then I may have used it, but TBH the back won't be seen and looks fine from inside as I gave it a pretty thick paint of coat.

Phew! JUST fits inside the limits - thats a 30cm ruler, and the limit is 30cm high! That worried me a bit and would really have annoyed me if I'd done everything. Another thing to note - the feet are gone, which brought it *even* further within the limit...they were just annoying me anyway, so its no worry TBH.

Hopefully I'll be able to afford some shiney stainless steel MNPCTech or KustomPCs ones in the future and they'll go on

Anyway, I'll try and pop in with some good photos on Wednesday when I submit my worklog for the compo

*waves* - til then

OH, and BTW, SFF needs a name I've decided

I was thinking Kou - wadda you guys think? It means "Box" in Japanese. Either that or think up some meaning for SFF other than Small Form Factor Even better, what about Kai?

Meh, I dunno. Something which describes the case or links in with it, any ideas?

Buyah!

Well done... and kudos to you for achieving where I failed...measuring..

Glad to see the unit came together well. I know exactly what you mean when it comes to flash photography and the illumination of every single, knit-picking, gosh-darn aberation. ...it's enough to make a grown man cry.

Can you link the competions URL? ...heh! I wanna keep an eye on how this pans out.

Again..."Well done."

P.S. Why did you have to kill my Gemini thread?

Competitions URL - go to www.cpcff.co.uk/phpBB2 and its in the Competitions board.

I'm just writing out my worklog which I shall add to the first post, along with more pictures - actually, they'll probably come tomorrow rather than later as its too dark now, maybe I'll get one in the dark

As you might have guessed I now have the Internet: comical as Sky (our ISP) rang up, went through some tests and told us the router was bust and they'd have to send out a new one. I came onto my PC to try and hax the router to get the Sky username and password which is hidden and embedded, and found we had net Then the phone rang saying that we had net but they were sending out a router anyway as a replacement because they couldn't cancel LOL

Anyway, after looking SFF over there are some things I would like to do now the competition is over and I have more time:

Cut the back edges of the acrylic so that it doesn't overhang the edges of the hinge
Add some shiney silver feet
Spray the DVD drive black or red
Install some UV LEDs in the top half
Put aluminium sheets (which marcus is getting me) over the sides in the bottom half
Mesh the back hole in the plywood

The next thing to do though will be get a Zalman Fanmate 2 (when I can afford it) as the front AcRyan fan is too loud for my tastes on full blast, and the only Fanmate 2 I have at the moment is being used on the CPU fan, which is an Akasa Amber 80mm
