Best deal on external hd?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to get an external hard drive to use for backup for my current comp and the one I plan to put together in the next few months. I'm looking at getting 500GB and possibly file sharing/network capabilities so I can share between the two comps. Below $150 or even $100 would be great. What do you all recommend and/or what do you personally use? Also, which backup utility do you recommend? Thanks a bunch.

Karens Replicator is an excellent backup tool. It has full support for sheduling and all that you would expect.

As for external drives, I prefer to use a custom build caddy, or disk in an enclosure. I had a bad experience with a prebuilt one.
Or something like a NAS box?

I appreciate the help, as I have been wanting to buy one for quite some time now and with the fairly low prices on drives nowadays, I thought the time was right to get one.

I was thinking of putting together a external hdd with enclosure , but wasn't too sure on how I would connect that to two comps through a network for cheap. I did however find this on clubit.com:

Seems like it would work for me and the prices doesn't look to shabby. What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the link Muttzcuttz!

A NAS box (Network Attached Storage). Nice. And $135, thats around £70 for 500GB. Nice

You'd just set up the replicator to run a nightly backup to the NAS box

By the way I use Karens Replicator daily and never had any problems

Alright, thanks Muttzcuttz. That's the best deal I could find for what I'm looking for. Would anyone still recommend building an enclosure HD instead of the link I posted up there?

EDIT: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAg.../dp/B000ND75C0

any thoughts on this one or others similar to it and price?
