AGP Card Help - Page 3

5200 was a agp 4/8x card so any card will work that runs on the 4/8x bus thiers a few cards in your budget that should do good. Look around the agp slot it should say what version agp it has. I thk agp 1.0 is 2x 2.0 is 4x and 3.0 is 4/8x

no its fine

Sometimes the connector is split like that on different cards

its split there because it can work and auto scales the voltage in 2/4x slot and 4/8x slots

I KNOW KNOW KNOW your desktop is an 8x

ANd if he wasn't sure MS windows system info would tell him

Ah, finally a question of which I know the answer to! When I was working with my rig, I learned all about these older AGP cards. If your AGP port has a notch closer to the back of the case, its an older AGP 1x/2x port. If it has a notch closer to the front of the case, its a newer AGP 4x/8x port. The reason the notches are different is because older AGP ports use higher voltages than newer ones, so a newer AGP card wouldn't be overvolted or anything when accidentally plugging it into an old port.

But the FX5200 that you're looking at, along with some other cards, is compatible with all AGP ports. If you look at the connector you will see that it has two breaks in it, so it will fit regardless of what your AGP port is.

So case in point get a card that has two notches! Just in case you have an older AGP port. I believe the 7xxx Series cards only fit in AGP 4x/8x slots..

EDIT: And by "notches" I mean those spaces inbetween the sections of the connector on the video card. The connector should be split into three pieces.

Maybe this will help. I remember a warning in my owners manual a long time ago for my Gigabyte 850 board. So I went and downloaded the manual. Attached is a snapshot of it. The attachment shows AGP x2 and x4 along with a warning that might apply to your situation.

So from looking at the picture, does the video card slot only have the x2 notch or does it have the x4 notch?

That's the old card. I will have to go over to his house to see what his motherboard says, but it is a Dell Dimension 8300 computer. The reason we are getting a new card is because the old card does not work, so i can't tell what his bios says on the agp speed.

You can put any 8x that is backward compatible with 4x into that machine. I just put a nVidia GeForce 7600GT into a Dimension 8100 last week. Keep in mind that they had the minimum power supply also 350watt.
