Thermalright Ultra-120 ??

Thread Starter
Is this heatsink still good compared to the tuniq and enzo ? I am thinking about getting it but I'm not sure. How much better is the Thermalright ultra-120 Extreme?

They're all good coolers with the Ultra Extreme being better then the Ultra vanilla.
I'm partial to the Ultra Extreme, it's better then the TTBT I had.
Really though, if you have good ambients and great airflow they all will perform well.
Here is a link to my Extreme Ultra mod, some temps in the last post.

i have just purchased the Thermalright ultra-120 extreme, it was only $2 dearer that the lower model. All reviews place it at the top however i have some concerns about weight. Is 750g too much as i have heard most boards have a max 500g recommendation??
ill post again when i receive my new cooler.

The backplate has a large enough footprint to distribute the weight properly.

To be honest if I were you I'd go with a the Ultra 120 vanilla over the Extreme. You won't notice any difference between the two unless your CPU is overclocked to like 4 Ghz, which given that it's an E6420 is an unlikely possibility. I've been having issues with my Extreme. The base on mine was so horrific, that even after spending 3 hours lapping it, there was a strip near one of the sides that wasn't even touched. Plus, the mounting hardware for Socket 775 lets you move the heatsink around a bunch, and that doesn't seem cool...

Sanding down the base of the Heatsink or cpu to make it flat. This makes the contact better which improves temperatures slightly.

It is possible to get Lapping kits here:
http://www.easypckits.com/

Or go and buy the needed grits from DIY stores or Car shops.

Here is a link to my Extreme Ultra mod, some temps in the last post.
Ambients are key. Don't get me wrong, the Ultra-120 is really good at cooling (I have one myself), but here's a little story...

One of my buddies has a 52" LCD Widescreen, and he wanted me took hook up my new rig to it. So I packed it up and went over there... and the first thing that I noticed was the ambient temp of at least 85F there. Me, I keep my inside temp cooled (or warmed for that matter) to about 65F year round. I live in Minnesota and this is the most comfortable for me.
At my place, my CPU runs at about 30C according to speedfan (and in the BIOS), e6600 @ 3.2GHz and 1.35 Vcore. So I hook it up (while sweating considerably) and press the power button.... enter the bios and sure enough... BIOS reports 38C within about 1 minute. Mind you I have 1 220CFM Delta, 3 x 93CFM TT Smartfans, and a 110CFM Vantec Tornado. It sounds like a damn rocketship and even my 8800GTX which typically idles @ 40C, was idling at 50C.

My point: Ambients mean a lot.

If I've wasted your time by you reading this, sorry. I though it may be a little insightful though.

PS: My father used to work at a place that programmed banking software. There were tons of huge servers and computers there, and I always wondered why it was freezing inside. Now I know.
