way hot x850 pro

Thread Starter
hey guys, lately when I play various games, I've noticed that my atitools temp reads at about 90 for my stock cooled X850 Pro (stock timings). it has gradually gotten to that load temp, but i figured it was because the temp in the house gets warmer during the summer. today, i was playing the new transformers game and it has much better graphics than my other games which must be stressing the card much more because upon exit, the temp was over 106!!! this can't be good for the card and i don't want to kill it. Any ideas? I wanted an arctic cooler 5 but can't find it anywhere...

My x800 Pro would run ~ 85c stock when playing fear. You need way better airflow or a new cooling solution. The max temp that those cards are rated to is actually ~115c that was something i found on ATi website not sure if i can find it again tho.

remeber altho when they say "max temp" it means If you go any higher yor cards going to burn up.

However that is a pretty hot card in the first place

if you're willing to spend the $40, the Zalman in my sig is arguably the best way to cool your g-card on air. also, having a side fan on your case blowing IN will also reduce your temps.

you're right - playing during the day when the weather is hot will have a huge impact on your g-card temps, but over 100°C is just asking for trouble.

Hey guys, i have 7 fans in the case total, including a side one. I went in and noticed that there was quite a build up of dust. I didn't immediately think of that since I just blew it out a month ago. Now with a thorough dusting the card is back at mid 40s idle and no more than 80 on load. This whole experience kinda worries me so I am still going to dump the stock cooler. Thank goodness for ATItool! Without it I wouldn't have noticed the high temps until it was too late. Thank you all for the help!

still make sure your side fan is an intake and not an exhaust. it makes a big difference in single slot cards.

I have a problem with my x850XT as well. Until recently I left it with the stock fan, however I kept having to clear it of dust and it was overheating even when idle - on a black background multicoloured dots would show up, playing a game and within 30 seconds huge tears show up that get progressively worse. I have water cooling for everything else to be able to even use the card I have to have a pedestal (40cm) fan pointed into the side of the case.

yesterday the fan on the card failed (made many a grinding noise) so I replaced it with the waterblock from the Asetek WaterChill kit and hooked it up.... Thinking my overheatin problems would be over I loaded up STALKER.... within 1 minute, tears covered the screen. Even with the fan on full the card gets hopt and although only a few artifacts show up with the fan on full, 'some' is more than none.

So what could be causing this? I may have put a little too much thermal grease on the chip, could that be a factor? Also, does the grease just go on the chip or on the square around the chip as well? Having to run the pedestal fan to do anything is total crap after I paid $300 for the watercooling kit.

any helpx0rz would be appreciated

EDIT: I use ATItool to scan for artifacts and they appear (without the pedestal fan) within 30 seconds.

EDIT 2: After 2 minutes both my screens are totally covered in multicoloured dots, and the cube on atitools has significant tearing.

EDIT 3: Both desktops still showing multicoloured dots everywhere after 5 minutes of the 40cm fan on high....

EDIT 4: Also, when playing Anarchy Online or running the ATI tool "3D View" the card makes a sort of high-pitched buzzing noise........ KIND OF like a buzzing noise because I can't explain it very well, more like a lowpitched CD spinning noise?

EDIT 5: Sorry Ok the 40cm is on high, pointing directly at the card, did "scan for artifacts" which lasted 20 seconds. Going to shut down the computer for a while to cool it down more and see if it does anything..... SpeedFan says my ambient temp is 25, CPU is 36 NB is 28. I that helps at all.

EDIT 6: Alrighty, computer turned on, ATItools started, Scan For Artifacts.... 28 seconds. Stopped it, started again, and 1minute40seconds later although it says "no errors" there is a little yellow dot on the cube.

EDIT 7: OH NOES!!!! I ran driver cleaner after following the instructions, and now when I try to reinstall catalyst partway through I get an error stating "Driver Install: the INF file was not found". of course the installation continues alopng, but it doesn't actually WORK..... After a reboot am till stuck with the broken default generic standard display adapter driver. Fun times.
