Seems like bad temps for a TR Ultra 120 Extreme

Thread Starter
I just put together a new PC. After looking for a long time, I decided to get the TR Ultra 120 Extreme. I figured I would have really low temps. I bought 4 Rosewill 75 CFM 120mm fans (2 for case and 2 for Ultra). After I put it all togther, I ended up getting 36-42C idle temps and 48-50C load temps which seems pretty high for running at stock speeds. I believe I have about 28-30C ambient temps. I've been doing some reading and I figured I either didn't put enough thermal paste or I need to lap the Ultra and CPU (which is Pentium D 940 C1 Stepping). I don't really want to lap anything cause I don't wanna screw it up. I was hoping I would be able to overclock to at least 4 GHz but I really wanna get closer to 4.5GHz (stock is 3.2 GHz). The whole reason I got the Ultra is so I could overclock better. What should I do in order to achieve this?

Better ambients and case with better airflow. Do you have a link for your case?
Seriously though, reapply your TIM, less is better.

Pentium D @ 4.5GHz with air cooling? That sounds like a tall order.

here is my case http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...768&CatId=1862 ... i have 1 fan in the front for intake and then two on the ultra 120 and rear for exhaust

4.5 would be sweet though

---

this is off the thermalright website... it looks like they put enough to where almost all you see is the paste... I didn't put that much .. should I try adding a little more or just reapply?

It should cover the whole topside of the chip.

Considering you're on air cooling and your ambients are 28-30C, I'd say anything under 10C above ambient is fantastic.
