Restart During Install

Computer is restarting at random, before the OS loads.

Brand new HDD. jumpers set to master. trying 4 different PSUs. re-seated all expansion cards. bios temp reading of CPU 104f (or 140.....*shrug* nothing abnormal at any rate)

could this be a motherboard going out? i'm clueless.

the GF is trying to re-install windows (just as a last resort) and during the installation, the computer just restarts itself. sometimes its really slow in loading through the post screen. i mean REALLY slow, before i went downtown earlier i sat staring at part where (when your booting from a CD) it would otherwise say "Boot from disk?" for 5 minutes before i said f it, "Babe, watch this for me, since thats all that we can appearently do. While i run this errand."

Shes griping me out for not having bought a cmos battery while i was out...could that be the problem? I've never heard of a CMOS battery needing changing if the computer was (last week) running fine. Since doesn't it recharge itself while the computer is on?

anyway, i don't have any direct question, sorry....i just need some suggestions to get this psycho gf off my back and back onto her myspace messenger

I had problems with my computer either hanging at the startup screen. (the 'whoshy' bar thing) Or just not getting anywhere at all, and it was the HD and the mobo. I had a corrupted BIOs, and my HD had burned out. So try that HD in a different computer and if it works then chances are its the mobo.
'bout time.

i got it working again. used my PSU tester, checked out. dunno how to do a memory test without a working computer with an OS up running a mem test program (assuming thats how its tested)

i just took it completely apart, checked jumpers, changed an IDE cable, and the reinstall for windows went through..... i swear, i can't leave her alone to her computer otherwise its like i have a second job....perpetually repairing and maintaining her rig
