"Dead" PCI-E Slot

Thread Starter
Can anyone help me figure this out: If I plug my video card into the primary pci-e slot, i get no display, but the fan on the gpu still turns on (thats where the "dead" part comes in). when i plug it into the secondary pci-e slot, it works. does this setup effect the speed of my card? I read something on other forums that the secondary is 2x, where the primary is 16x, and having it in the secondary slot effects benching. this is where my gpu problems come in...if you read THIS THREAD!, you see that something is up with my gpu. do you think this could be thecause (having the card in secondary slot?)

any ideas on getting the primary pci-e to work? thanks

with one card, you should have to place it into the primary slot. Check your power connectors to your motherboard. I think I didn't have any display when I didn't plug in the square 4 pin power connector onto the motherboard.
Does your GPU have a power connector too?

Hi.

I was reading some info on your mobo, and it stated that the 2nd PCI-E slot is x4 when in SLI, I would imagine that it would be the same for a single card in the 2nd slot.

Have you made certain that you have the apporpiate PCI-E slot selected for output? Is that an option in your BIOS?

... just some conjecture.

@Syrillian:

When I go t the bios, there is an option for: "Init Display First" and "PCI Slot" is selected, not PCIE

but would that matter? since there is no PCI display card

What are the options to select from?

I have never owned a DFI Mobo (yeah... I'm missing out) so I am not familiar with the BIOS.

I've got exactly the same problem with my board.

Going to RMA it when I remember.

Well, that's not the only problem - the ATX 4-pin is also burnt. But its one of the problem.

The DFI reps are awesome, just say you need to RMA it and they'll give ya a time - maybe an excuse to book a holiday?

I don't really know how to do that...maybe you, prosser, could guide me through it since you have a DFI board? (assuming you know how). I already looked at the DFI site for instructions, but theirs suck...I'd be more comfortable listening to somebody here
