Help- my GPU is stock underclocked!

Thread Starter
I bought a Biostar 7600GS 512MB on eBay (used), and another one on Newegg.com (used). I tested them and they both work fine. However, after trying unsuccessfully for 2 weeks to SLI them together, I FINALLY found the problem: the memory on the one I got on eBay was underclocked at 266mhz (532mhz DDR)!
"Easy fix" I thought. So, I "over"clocked the memory (using PowerSwitch) to where it should be- from 266mhz to 400mhz (800mhz DDR). BUT my system hangs and crashes when it's at 400!
The other card, from Newegg, is already at 400 core and 400 memory (800 ddr) and works fine.

This model of Biostar card is supposed to be at 400 core and 800 DDR memory. Is it possible the previous owner underclocked it and messed up the card?
Sorry, I'm very noobish to the world of overclocking.

I suggest you clock it with atitool to 400 and 800. If you want to do a bios flash, then use nibitor.

Its most likely a bios issue, seeing as theyre the same model card. Other than that, it could be a different model entirely OR the guy on ebay incorrectly labeled the card as a model with lower spec memory, which is MOST likely the problem here. I'd contact the guy and ask.

I could help you with a bios flash if you've got questions or anything.

Hum. Last I checked if a card gets taken from the computer in which it was OCed on, it will automatically go back to stock clocks. However I don't know it you change the BIOs on the card will it have it stay at a different clock or not. Try using a good program to OC the card. Like the Forceware which nVidia made for such a thing. It may be able to hold the clocks unlike the program your using. I've never heard of it, so I'm skeptical of it.
'bout time.

i just did a very quick Google search and found that the GeForce 6200 has memory clocks set at ddr 533. are there any identifying marks on a 7600 besides the heatsink that he can check to positively identify the model of this card?

sorry i can't help - i've never owned a GeForce.

Wow, thanks for the fast & helpful replies!

There's no doubt these are the same, and right, models of cards. Biostar released 2 versions of the 7600GS 512MB PCI-E: One with a fan, heatsink, and heatpipe, and one with no fan, a huge heatsink, and a heatpipe. Both cards were released with the exact same specs. The one I have that is underclocked is the version with no fan. The one I have that is properly clocked is the version with a fan.

This is the older model, that is no longer in production but easy to find. I have this one but it's the one that is properly clocked:

Newer model that i got from ebay that is underclocked (yes it's a massive heatsink):

Windows Device Manager, NiBiTor, PowerStrip, NVidia Control Panel- every program I have- identifies both of these cards as the 7600GS 512MB. If that's not enough, each card has identical ID stickers/barcodes on the back showing the card info/serial numbers/part numbers.

As for the thing about the BIOS.... THAT could be the problem! I looked up the bios info for each card and the older model, the model with the fan, has bios version 16.02. The newer one, underclocked & without the fan, has bios version 25.51. If you all really think the bios is the problem, I'll look into flashing the older one and updating it.

What operating system are you on? I have heard of more than a few people having problems getting SLI to work properly on Vista.

XP Pro.
I started a thread on the SLIzone.com forums about my SLI problems and they're pretty stumped as to why these cards wont properly SLI. This memory speed issue is the last stop down a long line of troubleshooting already done on my system/setup.
