Question about reinstall

Thread Starter
I want to reinstall Vista, but I really don't want to reinstall all of my games and applications and such after that. I have all my applications and games on one drive, and vista on a separate 40 gig drive. Is there a way I can do a back up of something so vista will still have access to all my programs after the reinstall?

You can use Norton Ghost (at least I think it works with Vista) or there is probably another free alternative. But I hear a lot of people use Ghost for backups.

What exactly would I backup though? I want to wipe the drive clean and to a complete reinstall. I'm sorry if I'm confusing you, I just can't think of a way to explain it.

I think you just have to backup the drive with vista on it. Since the games are all on the other drive, the registry and system files are what make the games work. I've never done this, so this is just a guess.

Ok, so it's the registry and system files. Thanks man, I didn't know what part made the games work. Thanks again. rep +

No. Not that I have heard or am aware of...an believe me if it was possible there would about twenty five FAQs on it and everyone would have alread linked you.

That's the short answer. You cannot somehow strip out the installed SW and reinstall the OS and then patch the SW into the new install.

Everything that makes the SW recognized and workable is written into the registry.

To my knowledge simply hacking the registry is not going to work...too many layers and layers of linkages to the SW as it installs.

If you do find out how to do it patent it and invite us to your island in Fiji...

this is what i like to do. i you want to save all your games you want to save your current location and status. just save the game save file folder, along with anything else you want to save on a seperate source like hdd or dvd rom, wipe the drive clean and then reinstall all programs then for games just copy and past or add your save file to the game. it usually works

EDIT: i re-read your post and you want to back everything up so you dont have to reinstall everything. no this is not possible because the installed game is made to work on the registry is was created in and drastically cahnging everything will make it not work. but the best way is to just save your save file. no one likes to reinstall things.....
