First time overclocking

I started pushing the MSI 8600gt tonite and in ATI tool I was able to get it to 660 core and 860 mem but after that I got artifacts but then my desktop went nuts (lines going everywhere and weird images coming up) I had to restart the computer. I went back to desktop and ran ntune and set the clock to 650 and 850 and everything was fine for a while but then the dektop went nuts again (lines going everywhere and weird images coming up and had to restart again). I set everything to 620 and 840 and now it seems ok and ran 3dmark06 and got 4735. Im wondering what would have caused that since it seemed like the desktop 2d. The highest the core got was 49c. Could it be memory timings on the vid card or something? CPU is still stock speeds. Aiming to get to at least 2.6 gig on the cpu.

try increasing the fan of the gpu, if not already at 100%. check the temperature of the gpu, if it's in the high 70s or 80s, you may need a better cooler to get 'er any higher.

I guess you missed the part about the gpu never getting over 49C so I doubt thats the problem. Im thinking it may be the voltage like mentioned. How do I increase the fan anyhow because ntune wont let me change it and the gpu is blanked out. Its running xp64 so could be why Im having some problems as well. Rivatuner was also giving me problems and wasnt overclocking the gpu. Im going to run ntune and see if it helps performance at all in fine tune mode (3hours)
