sli and crossfire?? several questions surrounding these two

Thread Starter
okay i know with sli you double almost everything besides ram, when in sli.
how about with crossfire? and im hearing that crossfire isnt as efficient as sli, rumor?

i know with ram the saying that its "sli ready" it just means its been tested by nvidia with an sli setup. and with a psu that "sli ready" same thing as with the ram but it has two have 2 pcie connectors. but what about mobos?

does it have to be "sli ready" or just have 2 pcie slots and a decent chipset?

does a motherboard that supports sli support crossfire^?

and any info on any thing thats related is greatly appreciated.

it either supports SLI OR crossfire.

So you pick one o the other.

The older crossfire wasn't as effiecient with the master/slave arrangement

As far as I know, to use SLI you have to have an SLI ready board. Same with crossfire. I don't believe they are interchangeable.

No.

In the state of the art, SLI and crossfire are pretty equal in terms of efficiency. It's all a matter of individual games' support of either format to determine which is better in whatever situation. (That and driver support.)

You can only do SLI with your current hardware.

SLI requires two identical cards (meaning two 7900GTs from any manufacturer)

FYI, the ABIT AW8D is CROSSFIRE ONLY. I learned the hard way. Sure, it may say "multi-GPU technology" in four different places on the box. Sure, it comes with an SLI bridge that says on it, in big bold white text, "SLI BRIDGE CONNECTOR". Sure, Newegg may advertise it as "SLI Ready". Sure, sure, sure. But spend a week trying to SLI the damn thing then watch the tech nerds on an SLI forum laugh at you for trying to SLI that mobo.

Intel 975x chipsets DO NOT SUPPORT SLI. I read SLI manuals, FAQs, everything i could find on the internet about what is required for SLI: typically, none of them mention what kind of chipset is required. You just have to ask the right people.
