iD will concentrate on making console games first and PC games second - Page 4

Well after John Carmack, everyone's favorite rocket scientist wannabe, said he hates developing for anything but 360, it sounds like that's what they're going to stick with.

Well, I did say that Microsoft would not pay out for a Windows only exclusivity deal. That would exclude the X360 as well, and I don't think that they would ever do that.

But you're right, I would expect them to try and negotiate an X360 + Windows deal in all reality.

Another point, Apple is beginning to take an interest (although mild at this point) in the gaming market, I see them making a push, in the future, for more OpenGL games that can run on Windows and Mac.
I can see Apple making a push, sure. They have no chance of landing any sort of "Apple exclusive" deal though...there's nowhere near the market of Mac OS users for any developer to take them seriously. The best they can hope for is to get some games to also be released on the Mac. If id's engine is as easy to use on multiple platforms as they claim, this may not be too out in left field.

#2 - The uber gamers with those decked out Sli rigs are the minority, which is precisely why most developers spend so much time optimizing because the greatest amount of backlash is going to come from lower-end casual gaming community(if the game is badly optimized), the people who own computers and thought they'd just try out a game.
But that just reinforces the argument I made before that spending large sums of money on a PC is starting to make less sense. If you accept that developers are already playing down to a lower common denominator, then the big expensive rigs are an even bigger waste of money than we thought.

I don't know that I do accept that, though. It seems as if modern games will run on an average system, sure; but that's not the system any real gamer would ever want to play it on. The "recommended" specs for games are still on the bleeding edge of hardware, it seems.

Computers are seen as a necessity whilst consoles a luxury. Therefore, a basic computer base will constantly increasing.

It really is quite debatable, 10 years from now I know, a lot of things will be drastically different.
Yeah, but that computer base isn't going to keep increasing its power forever. Like I said, there's no need for that kind of power for most consumer uses.

The only reason we'll need this kind of hardware in ten years is if Microsoft releases Windows Holodeck, or something. (And hells yeah, I'll happily buy the hardware for that!)

Well yeah I can see where most people aren't going to agree with me but like I said its up to personal prefernce.

I had a Playstation2 with GTA: SA on it and played it. It was fun and joyous but when I played it on the PC it looked better, played better, ran better, and was overall better.

Computers will always dominate consoles, unfortunately not every casual gamer out there will tell the difference. Most people just want a HDTV, a fun console, and a couple of games to play when they get home from work.

I was talking to my friend and Halo3 looks pretty bad ass...so much so that we're contemplating getting Xbox360's since theres going to be a price cut soon.

That being said once I get a Xbox360 there'll probably be a Xbox720 or something.

The thing I like about computers is one of these scenarios:

-Hey a new game is coming out *looks at req. specs* aww I need 512MB more RAM and a GeForce 7600

-Guy goes out and buys just the RAM and the Video Card

**Xbox//Console scenario**

-Hey cool Halo3 is coming out!

-...Wait I need to spend how much to buy the new Xbox360??

Point is with Consoles you either buy the new system entirely or get stuck in the desolate wastelands of obsolete consoles

Computers can be gradually upgraded to suit certain games and situations or you can go all out and spend $1500 like I did...thats the joy and freedom in PC gaming.

I could imagine a senario where they make PC games so hardware intensive only the folks with 1500$ rigs can play the games and they wouldn't pirate because what's an extra 50$ on top of 1500..

Then again "I paid so much for the system and now I must pay more for the game?!"

WOW has made lots of money because you simply can't pirate it, and if you do it's hard. Also WOW runs on almost any PC at quality settings.

True

But keep in mind that game was released how long ago? When it first came out plenty of people had to upgrade their systems (Just pointing out certain facts)

However games like Starcraft will live forever hehe

Its honestly not that big of a deal to me, if I find theres some good games for the Xbox360 then I'll just buy it...its realisticly not that much money in comparison (although I'd have to buy a HDTV )

I just know for a fact I'm never buying a Playstation3 lol

But thats why consoles are great. No upgrade needed. So the people who have had their 360's for over a year dont have to go out and buy RAM. However you are basing this scenerio off a person who has a gaming computer, so of course it would be less expensive to upgrade, than a whole new console. But if a person had neither, and had to choose either a console or new PC, console FTW(price wise).

I enjoy both PC gaming and console gaming, but all I am saying is consoles are for the average person, which is why consoles get so much attention from the gaming communitry. Just look at E3. G4 has a couple interviews with individual game studios for certain games for PC, but there are three whole 2 hour block devoted to the press conferance of each of the three consoles.(Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo)

All in all, if developers want money, than consoles are the best choice.

It is sad that we don't live in a day of technology that includes a Holodeck. For now, one can only dream of the possibilities
