Is this possible?

Hello everyone. I found this site a while back and decided to save it under my favorites incase I wanted some computer-related help... Well that day has come. I just registered in order to ask the following question:

I am just a teenager in highschool and I had asked my family for a computer for my 14th birthday. Well, they got me a laptop. I got a laptop instead of a PC since I do not have the space in my room currently for a computer.... anywhere. Anyways, the laptop was working fine until, recently, it just died. We took it to Best Buy and let Geek Squad take a look at it and they said the motherboard was just fried... The symptoms of my computer prior to this were the computer being on without using the screen, no hard drive usage, nothing... It was as dead as a computer could be beyond turnign off the power.

So my family got me a new laptop and so far things have been ebtter than ever with it. Recently I got curious and decided to take apart my laptop... didn't get much out of it besides the hard drive and the RAM chips.

The thought just crossed my mind like a week or 2 ago.. (finally, the question) I was wondering if I could take my old laptop's hard drive and, using some kind of hard drive-to-USB Port cable, access the data still on the hard drive itself and just copy/pase all the stuff I wanna salvage off of it. My old laptop was some kind of Toshiba Satellite model... Got it in (I think) 2004 or 2005.

All I want to do with this hard drive would be to take it and just grab all of my old songs or games I still got on it. I may wanna see if I could try making it into a portable hard drive, but the possibility of me being able to do that is kinda doubtful.

Any information about this topic would be very much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums

Well that is possible as long as the old HD is still working.

Whats the interface on your old HD? You can either get an internal connector to USB adaptor and plug in the HD through your USB and transfer data to your current internal HD. Or you can temporarily exchange the old HD with the current HD if they both have the same interface and then transfer to an external USB drive or HD drive.

If by interface you mean operating system then the laptop with that old hard drive was using Windows XP. My new laptop is using Windows Vista (Woulda probably went with XP, but at the Best Buy that we were at when we got this thing there were no computers there that WEREN'T using Vista).

Theres a barcode sticker covering it, but I think it is IDE... I can see an I at the beginning and I believe I see only 3 letters total and the faint outlines of "D" and "E".

What you could do is get like an external encloser (can't spell) for the old hard drive and you is as like a backup or something like that.

so what you guys are saying is that I would go and get a casing that would probably be used on something like a portable hard drive and just hook my hard drive into it and use any cables that were provided with the case to hook it up to my computer?

idk how it works with lappies, is yours brand new? Doesn't opening a laptop count as voiding the warranty?
