The laptop external enclosures simply have an IDE and power connector that go into your laptop drive...it's just as simple as full size ones.

If you were brave enough, you could just replace the laptop drive currently in your laptop with your old one. Not the enclosure that goes into the laptop, but the actual drive. You will need a screwdriver and possibly a hex screwdriver.

I know this has been covered - but I'm reiterating because the thread has gone off-topic.

First, identify the kind of connection on the old HD.

Does it have pins like http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggIma...136-130-01.jpg

or does it look like
http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggIma...146-039-03.jpg

Top link is to an ATA-6 drive (most similar to IDE desktop hd's)

Second link is to a SATA drive.

Something like this will work for the ATA-6 drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145368

While something like this will work for the SATA drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817145392

Sure, they make one that can handle both, but not specifically for laptop drives.

Look on the bright side...the enclosure and drive create an amazingly simple and easy backup for whatever you need it for (music, pictures, etc) and requires no AC power cord, as it draws power from the USB connection.
