Naming schemes in GeForce's?

Thread Starter
I've always wondered if there was some guide on this but here goes...

Whats with the naming scheme? Does one pair of letters mean higher quality than another?

Examples:

-GS
-GT
-GTX
-GTS

Also on a side note like with the 2900"XT" as well...its always been very confusing to me.

Obviously a 8800"GTX" is *better* than a 8800"GTS" but when I look at the GeForce7 series its somewhat confusing. Like a 7800"GTX" sounds sexier than a 7900"GS"

Kidna...

he 7800 and 7900 might have a diff number of pipelines, generally more with the higher ranked one, but a GTX usually has much better clocks than a GTS or GS.

GS's are usually OEM/BUDGET stuff, whereas GTS are for the budget enthusiast, GTX for the enthusiast, and Ultras for the hardcore people with deep pockets/heavy wallets.

For nVidia....

The flagship x800 usually launches first. Then a few months later mid-range x600 launches and usually so do the entry x3/4/500 cards. Then there is sometimes a refresh of the flagship x900

The x stands for the generation.
Once again...

These suffexes can only be used to compare cards with exactly the same model number before them. Obviously a gforce 2 ultra is not going to be faster than an 8800GTX.

It basically goes like this (from better to worse):

Ultra
GTX
GTS
GT
GS
"Vanilla" (no suffex)
LE
XT
TC (turbocache)

I might've missed a few but you get the basic idea.

There was also "Ti" on the older MX 4 cards and the likes, if I'm not mistaken.
