Just goes to show... you need to pay attention.

On my PC at work I kept getting BSODs for some reason so I tried to back my stuff up via the network, but those BSODs wouldn't leave me alone. So I removed the HD and put it in my secondary PC and leeched everything off of it.

While I had it open, I decided to do a bit of "Spring Cleaning" (remove CPU cooler & reapply AS5, remove dust, tie away some cables. That sort of thing. In order to remove my CPU's HSF I need to remove the mobo (cooler is the CoolerMaster Hyper 48).

So, I clean the CPU & HSF, blow away some dust, ties some cables away, put the mobo back in the case and reattach everything. By this time my file transfer is done so I put the HD back in its rightful place and started up the PC. ---- no POST (power on, fans on, but that's it - no beeps no video, no nothing). I was like "What???" So I recheck all connections, make sure the mobo is tightened down properly and not creating a short, triple check all external plugs (monitor, etc).

So, I'm rechecking the HSF's screws and I notice a plug is empty up by the CPU (it's a 4-pin plug) so I says to myself "Self there's a plug missing". My cable management went a bit too far and I tied away the 4-pin CPU plug.

No needless to say I'm feeling a bit sheepish today.

Morale of the story: your PC "does" need that 4-pin power plug

Meh - I installed a fan controller and my PC suddenly stopped booting afterwards. I hadn't touched any of the power cables or anything apart from the molex. Unplugged it and still no POST - there was just no video.

Decided to check if there was a short; ooo, there's a power cable. Which one's that. It's the 4-pin! ***! Really confused me as it had somehow unplugged itself!

Somehow, even the 4-pin pwr plug has that little clip thing to "lock itself in" it is usually really easy to just pull it out -- maybe I have a bad clip.
