Windows Server or Linux Server?

Thread Starter
I've been trying to find a better way to share files between me and my friends because we do alot of video and audio work together. We have been just using MSN to trade files we've needed from one another back and forth but someone told me itd be easier if one of us just got a server and then the file sharing would be much easier. I don thave the highest budget but whatever I dont know I can learn pretty quickly I was just wondering if A. my current computer could handle a server OS and B. Is that a good solution for my problem? and C. If getting a server or changing my current computer OS to s server OS which OS should I get a Windows or Linux one? and D. Which version of OS should I get?

Unless your familiar with linux and getting hands deep in the CLI don't bother with linux as a server OS. Go with windows, everything has a nice GUI.

Your current computer can handle a server os, but can your DSL line? You'll need a hefty upstream and it is a good solution.

Linux = best type of server. Can be dedicated, because you dont have to restart with updates and is just all round better. Plus it's free. =]

Have you looked at SHARING FOLDERS on MSN LIVE MESSENGER?

You bassically have a shared folder which will be updated with new files each time something is added

See if you can get a hold of Windows Home Server Beta. It is a great peice of software. Easy to use, and very functional.

I have a basic Comcast internet connection. Although I don't need a massive amount of bandwidth. I only plan on sharing files with a few people not a large group or anything. Im probably going to try Windows Home Server, but Im also going to look into Suse and Ubuntu because I dont know about GUI right now but there is little I havent been able to teach myself computer related atleast.

Windows, for remote desktop. Also stability wise I have achieved 4+ weeks uptime on server 2003 boxes, usually broken by a power outage.
