Intel "Penryn" Core 2 Duos Revealed - Page 2

huh? Back when my main rig had a X2 I used a P4 for multi-media because it was better at it. That was all over the net that P4's were better for that sort of thing.

All I really knew at the time was that my TV card had a near perfect picture on the P4 and it was all snowy on the X2.

And now X2's are better than C2D's for that sort of thing?

"multi media and number crunching" what are AMDs best at "muti media and number crunching" So go ahead and say AMD is to far behind or is dead or cant come out with anything but remeber that your comparing your C2D to a CPU that is more than twice its age and your isent even twice as fast.(in most cases)
No, back in the day AMD picked up Intel's scraps.

Back in the day isn't 3 years ago. AMD had a good run and it's over.

Have you ever done any muti media benchmarks on a intel and AMD system,my dad has a P4@3.0GHZ in his dell 8300 and my old sempron 3200+ beat the hell out of his in benchmarks and in video play back as well as DVD in coding and decoding.

A nothere stupid post by a stupid person, how is 2005 not almost 3 years ago?in 2005 the 939 versons of the 4000+S come out on AM2 (4800+ beat out a e6300 in a benchmark or two)and the 6000+ is still there beat out the e6600 is some benchmarks,So i dont see how you think that intel made a big jump odds are that AMD will come back, you act like they have a big gap to fill?In the market (out side of overclocking) where stock clocks is what you get intel is not that fare ahead in the dual core market,Also if Intel mad a jump to the fornt what makes you thing that AMD cant? netburst got owned and intel jumped for that to Core (wich sucked)to Core 2 (wich is "good").

Yeah you can get my processor now for $66.50, which performs slightly worse or otherwise on par with an e6300, except those cost $186. AMD is not getting owned in the least...all they had to do was drop prices.

That hurts their revenue and profits, but AMD is still managing to have the best value for the performance. If you aren't overclocking that value goes a long way.

Okay. Fine.

Intel *invented* x86. AMD copied it and was behind the curve and until AMD64 took all their tech from Intel (for the record, Intel traded SSE4 for AMD64).

AMD never did anything 'till Hammer and even that was luck.

i disagree. this isn't "old" technology that production costs are linear. AMD can't just stay 2 steps behind intel even if they want to. It just doesn't work like that. Both the corporate and mass market comsumer will buy "bang-for-buck". And when you have the best, even your old stuff, or "cheap" stuff will beat the guy behind you.

sure, it does come down to production costs + R&D costs.
but does a 50% faster processor cost 50% more to produce? no it does not. So if you are ahead in the tech curve, you will be in a better position for winning the production cost battle.

Like ClaytonCallihan said, hew doesn't mean to be offensive (I don't think atleast)

All of you just take a step back, AMD cannot make parts at $70 and make much money, not nearly as much as Intel is probably making. Intel is dominating the mid and high range as well as being nearly a full year ahead of AMD. Top it all off with die shrinks and new architecture every 2 years, and you have an Intel that has learned from its mistakes and will not be having any Netburst fiascoes any time soon. They have also taken the money making side of the One Laptop Per Child program, powering the servers for the project.

What does AMD have? Phenom will have some architecture tweaks, probably 65nm, but who knows. Quad cores when Intel will be debuting octal cores. Will be interesting to see how they deploy them, they have 65nm nearly down, but they need to produce in volume at 65nm, if they debut the phenom/Barcelona at 90nm, it will be Pentium D volcano's all over again. Also these new chips will get a new socket, yup, so those of you that poured money into AM2 you will be praying till release date, hoping AMD gets a Phenom to be compatible with two sockets, but yet again feeling the push to migrate to a new socket again.

No I am not manipulating the facts. period. Did I leave anything out? nope, maybe that Barcelona keeps getting pushed back, a sign of a desperate company? maybe. We will see. Will Penryn really be as good as they say? maybe again.

We can only wait til both Intel and AMD have played their trump cards in Q3/Q4 before we can really judge.
