Dual Gigabit LAN???I'm lost!

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
I have a motherboard with the nvidia 680i chipset. The manual indicates that this board supports dual gigabit lan...well I went out and bought a second ethernet cable...and I hooked it up into my router.

So now, I have TWO ethernet cables coming out of my PC into my router. Is that all I have to do? Do I have to enable anything in my BIOS? I've looked in the BIOS and there is NOTHING to enable for dual gigabit lan.

What are the benefits of this? I've heard that one LAN port can be used for downloading AND the other LAN port can be used for uploading? Is my PC automtically configured for this?????????????? Will I see any better network performance with all of this enalbed?

Finally,,,I used the command prompt and I input the following command: ipconfig/all...
I do have TWO LAN IPV4 address on my PC now...so it must be working.

PLEASE give me some input on this..and let me know if I have to configure anything else!

Thanks,

Nathan =)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that's how it works at all... you won't get any increase in network performance as windows will just select the first connection it finds... and besides, the one LAN port is more than capable of handling both download and uploading data.

you have to go into the nvidia control panel and find networking, once there go to adjust teaming configuration. You have two settings there. Do not combine my adapters (no teaming) and combine my adapters (teaming), select teaming. This will make them both look like one adapter, however as you said, one will be purely for download, and the other for upload. There is a performance benefit there, because there is much less collision and downtime, though the benefit is only really seen if you were both downloading and uploading at the same time, dedicated downloading performance is minimally affected.

If you don't have another PC with dual LAN teamming or at least 2 other PC's accessing the first one at the same time at full speed then it's worthless to you.

LOL Contrary to what it may seem, dual gigabit lan doesn't do you much better.

it may seem that dual anything is probably better than single anything.

but dual gigabit lan fools people into thinking - > wow my internet will be faster -> this is wrong.

the mobo's have dual gigabit lans because some use one to connect to the internet and the other to network other computers as a hub or a router.

Nvidia has a application called taming where if you connect both to the internet you can basically bridge the connections to try to get a faster connection, but it will probably only give you more bandwidth and may be a little faster speed but probably only more bandwidth
