Hard-Drive noise

Thread Starter
So yesterday I just got in my brand new Maxtor 500gb hard-drive and while setting up my comp about once every 30minutes it would make a tiny click noise that wasn't really loud but just different from the normal accessing sound. Then came a tiny screech like sound, I spent all day transferring files to it from the old comp and after googling I heard it could mean the hard-drive is about to die ( but its brand new =\\) so do you think it is defective or should I wait and see if the clickings get worse?

Clicking and definitely a screech would be a sign on a faulty hard-drive.

I highly recommend returning it for a replacement before you get all your data on it...

Id get any data you have on it (probably not much) off it, then wait to see what happens. Im going to go out on a limb and say its getting ready to die. Clicking and screeching noises are good indications. You could try sending data to and from it to test if its reading/writing capalities are still there, but id give it a while before you put important data on it.

get it off however you can, DVD-R, another drive, something. You could be in danger of losing all of it.

Ill start putting my files back on my portable HD (only 40gig though) , just in case. Ill hang with it for a few days and see how it goes. It read/writes perfect , its really fast over my 2mb ide hard-drive , and it took forever to ship so it sucks that its proabably faulty =\\

Clicking and screeching is HDD for 'I'm going to die soon, RMA me'!

You might be able to get a cross shipment so you can transfer the stuff over before returning the defective drive

Well Ive got all my needed files backed up now , however like I said since I have defragged the HD the noise has stopped occurring 80% less frequently(and before that it was only about once every 30minutes, now I hear a small click every hour and a half or so) , do you suggest waiting it out a little bit or just rma'ing asap?

My HD clicks every now and then and nothing's gone wrong with mine so far and it's been running almost 18 hours every day since 25th December..

Speedfan reports the Performance as full but with the Fitness has one bar missing.

Hmm.
