DX9 was funky. 20 different DX9.0c versions was stupid - I like incremental naming.

The CPUs will be closely integrated with the GPUs. So, for example, they could share polygon data, and the GPUs could render stuff while the CPU does physics, both of them passing info back and forth. Since they'd be connected by the HTT link, they'd have a supreme amount of bandwidth(even compared to PCIe 16x), and way way less latency.

Some CPU engineers have theorized that a GPU with direct access to the CPU and RAM would have about 400% efficiency compared to our current add-in card design. That means a 3.0ghz 16-shader GPU-in-a-socket would perform like an 8800GTX does today(128 ~1.5ghz shaders). Pretty spiffy. Even if they don't get the speed that high, a 1.5ghz 32-shader card is easy to make by ATI/nVidia's standards.

Not to offend you kramy, because you're more knowledgeable than nearly everyone here on the subject, but its this sort of theoretical crud that makes this industry so hard to deal with. When we see actual unified steps towards a certain technology is when that technology becomes worth a damn. At the same time, these unified steps tend to occur 2-3 years after talks like this have been made, and 1-2 years after the next technology is already being talked about. And all the while, of course, we forget the technologies that so many claimed would be big that never made it. FO hardware, PCI-e 2.0 (which is supposed to support the whole add-in GPGPU idea), 1nm processes, quantum computing, and all the other crap thats said to happen that never will.

Well...I think they already do. DirectX is just an api...
