Additional Cooling for 8800

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
Lets talk about after-market cooling.

First of all the only aftermarket cooling I have is a Arctic Freezer 7 mounted on my CPU.

My temps are as follows, degrees F':
CPU=110-120
SYS=115-125
GFX Card=150-180+

I just built a new system with an 8800gts card and as everyone who owns one knows, they really run on the hot side. I have to manually increase the fan rpm when playing games as well. Most of the computer is decently cooled, but under the graphics card the air is very warm. The card idles around 150'f+ but would probably go up to 180'f under load if I didn't increase the fans.

I heard about fans that fit into the PCI, ect. card slots and suck the air out. Does this mess up the air flow in an ATX case? Are these a good option?

What other kinds of cooling could I look into? If possible, I'd like to cool other parts of my computer. Having the 8800 graphics card blocks any after market cooling on the Chipset I believe. Is there a work around for that/anything I can do to cool that and lower all overall temperatures?

Thanks for checking this out.

and even more for helping!

Have you tried a slot cooler under the card? I heard they work well. How does your case look?
My case has a fan on the cover and on top and I would like to run a slot cooler also. The fan on top seems to exhaust the most heat which makes sense because heat generally goes up.

you can put a fan on some legs and stick it under, or get a pci-slot fan contraption..... does your case have a VGA vent?....
basically... find a way to throw air into that fan..... p_doughboy modded his with a new fan

I have that V-Cool thing...works wonders for my X1950pro...we'll see this week end how does on a 8800GTS. It spits out a decent amount of air and it goes right into the the fan on my 1950pro...i think the fan on the 8800's are little more the front of the card though. So I don't think the fans will line up perfect but it should be close.

As far as sound goes, I can hear the thing if it set to high...but just barely. A decent out fit in my book. I really wonder why this the only PCI intake fan on the market...at least I can't find any other ones.

Oh yeah...if you have a lower side vent that you can stick four long screws into a fan and place it under your card...but with out a side vent your blowng internal hot air on it and it won't help as much. I decided I wanted to get a case that was fairly air tight with no extra vents for a change. After four months I can't find a spec of dust in my case but I also had to get special things like this v-cool to help my temps.
