Thread Starter
I have a pair of WD 160GB SATA Hard Drives in my computer right now. I am planning on getting a larger hard drive or drives and I was wondering which is the best to get? I have been looking into 4 drives specifically.

Hitachi Deskstar 1TB

Samsung Spinpoint 500GB

Western Digital Raptor 150GB

and

Western Digital Raptor 74GB

I can afford 2 of any of these easily but I only really need 1 of the drives. I was just wondering if a Raptor is really worth the money for the speed or if I should invest into one of the larger drives to get mor space for my money. Any help would be really appriciated.

I'd get the 1 TB one

But that's me.. Unless it's really horrible though. I'd see if I could find some reviews first if I was you but I got a 320 gig Hitachi and it seems pretty good and silent.

Get 2 Raptor 150GB drives and put them in Raid 0, you won't be disappointed..

Personally, I think the Raptor's are overrated. And 1TB? Unless you download ALOT of Music, DVD's, etc.. That Spinpoint will be more than adequite

I would recommend two Samsung Spinpoint 500GB drives in RAID 0, this will give you the storage space as well as the speed. (Plus these drives are quiet and don't tend to overheat as much as the raptors)

Raptors really are overrated!

Personally on a bigger drive, I'd rather go either RAID 5 or RAID 1...that way I don't lose all that data if a drive fails on me! I really don't have any room to talk though since I have RAID 0 on my server....but that's only because I'm too poor to afford RAID 5 currently.

If you bought two more (4 total) Samsung Spinpoint 500GB drives you could go RAID 10 (or RAID 0+1). This would give you the speed of RAID 0 and the Security of RAID 1

Any one drive could fail with a possible two drives failing (depends witch two fail) and still have all of your data safe!
