I have seen his iphone in action and I am very impressed with the GUI. It's intuitive to the extreme and is very nice looking--the display res is high enough to browse the web etc--it's fast--it works perfectly from what I can tell.

If you have the bucks do it.
Good post Thats what I like to see.

I myself have no opinion on the iPhone other than they should have released it worldwide straight away so I could have a fiddle with one

I have one, and absolutely love it. I tossed my blackberry a week after getting it. The GUI is unlike anything you've ever used, it's so intuitive and anyone could figure it out after a few minutes of use. There are some things left to be desired like MMS, but we are well on the way to unlocking the phone.

Mine is skinned, and ringtone modded (and has been since a week after release). Head over to modmyiphone.com and lurk on the forums and see how things are. Yes you're going to find a bunch of "fanboys", but I am a PC user and about the furtherest thing from an Apple Fanboy that you'll find.

E-mail on the device is a dream come true, you can even PUSH your email to it if you forward your current account to a Yahoo! account (until we find a way to mod the mail client on the phone). The phone / contacts area couldn't be any better in my personal opinion, as it sync's with your pc, and has every piece of information you could want on a person stored on the phone.

EDGE is "slow" as everyone says it is, but for the most part it isn't horrible. It will make you appreciate Wi-fi or EVDO (for you 3G users), but I find that most everywhere I go has free Wi-fi, so the lack of EDGE speed very rarely effects me. Safari lacks plugins, which is a bit of a downer when it comes to trying to watch flash based videos and the like, but youtube is rapidly expanding the H.264 database so you can see more videos on the phone every day.

Text messaging and the keyboard are a dream. I wish my blackberry's predictive text was this intuitive. If you haven't seen the video on apple.com on how the keyboard and predictive text works, I suggest you go check it out. It is a real treat once you get the hang of it. I managed to become quite proficient at it after only a few hours of surfing / messaging (unlike all those reviewers that said it took a week).

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me and I'll try to field them as best I can.

I just bought an iPhone and I love it as well. The interface is just perfect for this type of multi-touch interface. My favorite part is how well all of the applications are integrated with each other. For example, if I'm listening to music via the iPod app and a phone call comes in, the song fades away and the phone app expands up and shows whos calling. If I want I can ignore the call and my song will resume or I can answer it. The lack of copy and paste functionality is pretty much not even needed because of the integration they have with all the apps. The keyboard works great all though it can cause problems not being able to "feel" the keys. It is so fun to take advantage of the accelerometer in the iPhone. While browsing the web I can rotate it sideways, or while looking at pictures or browsing my music by cover art via coverflow with the phone in landscape mode. I could go on but I have to go for now. I definitely recommend this phone.

PS. EDGE does suck. Wi-Fi is 100x better

I don't even have a cell phone . But anyway just like any Apple product it isn't worth it. At 600 dollars I would rather get a 8800.

I don't like it purely because it's touchscreen. I just don't want to look like a jackass while I'm staring at the screen dialing a phone number.

Very excellent post. You've convinced me never to buy an iphone.

Whereas this one doesnt. You admit you have no cell phone at all yet feel the need to throw in your two cents. Great advice.

I'd just like to add that you're accustomed to American cell phones. You get a subsidized phone with a small feature set and they bombard you with faceplates and ringtones to make it sound attractive. If you've ever been abroad, and purchased an unlocked phone you'd know exactly what I mean. Every phone (not just a few) in Europe have tons more features, have 10x faster mobile broadband, and best of all they work on every carrier without paying some company to unlock it for you.

Why does any of this matter? Because you won't find cheap $100-$200 phones abroad. Unlocked phones can be purchased anywhere and range from 3-600 (this is for your standard Samsung type phones). So before you complain about a price tag consider the market elsewhere.

Yes the iPhone is locked (sigh - hate American providers), but it has as many features crammed into it as the unlocked phones overseas. While I do realize there are Windows Mobile smartphones here that people will claim are superior blah blah blah, it's all about what the end user is looking for. You can try and force your opinions on people only to have it bite you in the @$$ later, or just be informative and let them develop their own perceptions of a product.

Having said that - I recently scratched my beloved iPhone (deep, like fingernail snagging, non-hiding, no filler deep), and tried everything under the sun to fix it. I eventually gave in and called Apple Care, and had the most pleasant customer service experience in my life. I was greeted by one of those voice recognition systems that asked what I was calling about, and told it I had a warranty claim and was forwarded to a CSR with ZERO holding time. This was at lunch hour too, so I know they must've had a call queue; nonetheless I was in shock that there was no ludicrous hold time. Anyway, the CSR wasn't some foreigner that barely spoke English, and he informed me that since the scratches were in the optical glass that it would be covered and it was no problem. He shipped me a loaner phone free of charge (next day air), and I used the same box to return my phone (next day air, their return label), and then had my phone shipped back (next day air, SATURDAY DELIVERY). I was amazed at how swift their service really was.

After my little Apple Care experience I can say with 100% certainty that I would buy from them again. While I may not run a Mac OS (largely because it won't run games worth a crap), I will definitely buy things like iPods, iPhones, etc.

It is quite dissapointing that North America gets shafted on the cell phone market. Being that it's a mixture of locked CDMA and GSM providers, most cell phones manufactures would rather release their nicer phones to the Eastern Hemisphere being that it is almost completely an unlocked GSM market.

EDIT: I DO work in the wireless market, by the way.
