Coworkers HD- Corrupted sectors

So a coworker of mine just installed a new 80 Gig WD hardrive (IDE) into his old HP that killed his original HD. When he installed it, it immediately ran checkdisk and found bad sectors. He eventually got windows installed after the fix, and left the computer on for a while. When he rebooted, he again was prompted to run checkdisk, and the same sectors were bad. So everytime he boots his computer, the hour long check runs. Each time he says it finds even more bad sectors, and now he can't even get into windows because checkdisk causes the computer to restart, which reinitializes checkdisk.

Does this sound like a bad HD? I had a chance to play with his computer before he removed the old corrupted hard drive, and BartPE couldn't even open the drive at all. Is the computer killing Hard drives or is it just a bad drive?

If its really a new HDD and not just a different HDD, I'd go for the comp killing them if it went out that quick... boot up an Ultimate Boot CD and run the WD Diagnostics on the HDD. If its new, most of the WD have a 3 year mfg. warranty...

Nice, I havn't used the ultimate boot disk before. I'll try that out. Infortunately the thing is at his house, so I'll have to pass that on to him. Thanks for the suggestion!
