HAL = Hardware Abstraction Layer. Maybe something else is wrong with either config/partition/some 5417 elsewhere.

I'd love to get that machine for a day to see how it turns out in my hands. Nobody living nearby that could help him out?

PeAcE.

ok Neo.
Lets help you get Windoze stable again.
You said you installed another installtion on another partition.
And then after you choose which one to boot (which - I assume you get the chace to at startup) it tells you about that file.
Correct?

Either, booting from the Windoze CD (of the same installation thats now giving you probs) - you should get the chance to use the "repair" function.

At the first screen, press R.
now, sometimes it WILL detect the installation, other times it wont.

If it doesnt THEN, REstart, and boot from the CD again.
Then go through the disclaimer crap - and right before it shows your the partitions (after it scans the drive) - it should say that it has detected a previous installation.

You should know which on is bugging (MCE right?) - select that one, and then press R. (apply common sense)

hmm, strange - you say it was running CS fine at first eh!?

You must have installed something! :| (after)

Think man.

Michigan, and I went through a whole lot of crap last night, apparently the hal.dll was being raped by boot.ini, and I had to do what Grim has described up top, but it wouldn't work, my cd locked up even when I took it out, it kept taking me to the recovery page, and since I used the Gateway CD it didn't have the damned repair thing in the first place, so last night I had to completely reformat, and now I'm using the other version of XP I have because the other one takes like 6 hours to install when this only takes 20 minutes, and I hope I can just transfer all my crap over when I am patient enough to install the other one again, this is making me really mad:/. I installed the sound drivers after and it made it run bad again, but the thing is I don't know why because a sound card did not help me before. I'm hoping I don't run into this again later when I try because, DAMN, lol. I'm thinking its either the hard drive or the processor, and my friend says the processor should not cause choppiness, so I guess I gotta buy a new hard drive whenever I get some extra cash, everything else is brand new. If anyone has any more ideas, by all means, help me.

Ok - just make sure you have your data backed up.
And formatting is no issue at all.

but before we get on that matter.

May I ask - do you hear any clicking noises in your HDD?

has it become any louder recently?

No clicking noises, the only clicking I heard last night on my computer was when I accidentally put 2 cd's in my cd drive at once, lawl. Never ran a full drive read scan. And no I couldn't try my friend video card and he couldn't try mine, he said he didn't think it was it because I already tried my other video card in my computer. And I thought formatting a lot was bad for the hard drive? I've formatted like 80 times total after I first bought it. And I just got my other stick of ram from ups so brb as I install it, then I'll have 2 gig in dual channel:O.
