External Hard Drives

Thread Starter
Hello,

Which one of these external hard drives is best? I don't care as much about the eSATA connection, as I will only really use the USB 2.0 interface.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822101016
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822101029

They're both 400GB, 7200 RPM, 8mb cache, and the same write time and probably the same read time. Is one better than the other, from what you guys can tell?

Now I have another question:
Do any of you suggest another external hard drive that might be better than these for the money? I want at least 300GB, and it must have USB interface. I won't go over $100. So, any suggestions? Or is one of these my best bet? They appear to be the best I could find on Newegg, anyone know of any good deals on another site?

Thanks guys!

Either of those would be comparable performance wise if you are using USB with both.

You ought to think seriously about getting an eSATA card and use the second one as an eSATA drive, though ... it's about 7x faster than USB ... basically the same speed as an internal SATA drive.

Well, maybe eventually. It's just to store all my movie and game "backups" on.
I'm not going to install stuff on them, so load time isn't super important. Because the cheapest one on Newegg was $20 for a laptop one, then I would need another one for my desktop... =/

They are both good from what I can see, but if I where you mate, I'd chip in another 100 bucks on WD's My Book series. They cost more BUT they also have much more storage.

For 100 bucks extra you get 750 gig of space or 200 extra then you get 1TB. That will last you for what? a century?
Seriously you won't be needing space for a millenia after getting one of the My Book series. This one is a good buy, atleast I'd say so.

But if it's too much money, which is understandable, if that's the case I have a feeling that this would be your best bet. The second one seemed to be causing some problems in the reviews.. Remember though if you got money to spend, you can nail 1TB for 300 bucks.

I wished I could see a 1TB drive for sale in Norway for that price

Well, as far as one being better than the other ... probably not; the second one would be better if you someday want to use it as an eSATA drive, though ... it has both USB and eSATA ports ...

Might get it to be future proof ...

Yeah, I probably will.

And DVtriple6, if you noticed I didn't want to spend over $100 to begin with. I don't really want to more than double my price range to get a bunch of space I probably won't use... and even if I do, then I'll just upgrade. No big deal. But I don't want to spend $220-$370 on one. More like $80-$90 is good for me... lol.

Sorry to semi-hijack. What is eSata? I have sata ports in the I/O panel of my motherboard, are those what eSata refers to?

eSATA = "external SATA"

My P5B-Deluxe has a port on the back; works well ...
