8800gts and a 775dual-vsta mobo?

post #1 of 9
Thread Starter
Well i picked up a 8800gts and am wondering if it was such a good idea...my mobo is a asrock 775dual-vsta and i just remember the electical capability of the 16x pci-e slot is only 4x.

1 - would this even work in my board? - couldn't find any documentation...
2 - i know the performance is probably going to suck, so should i just wait for a new mobo?

need some serious opinions as i'm getting the "itch" to install it...

I think the electrical capacity means you will only have a quarter of the bandwidth you normally would. Im pretty sure the card would work just fine, you just might have a bit of a bottle neck.

yeah 4x bandwidth will cut that cards performance almost in half. go for a new mobo. something with a p965 chipset should be good
post #6 of 9
I've been in this predicament, it will work. But as already stated you won't get the full UMPH!! If your planning a not so distant mobo upgrade, then roll with it. If not keep it on the things to do list.

Thread Starter
Well i just installed the 8800 gts in this mobo, and here is my findings...keep in mind this is running at 4x pci-e bandwidth.

After cleaning and installing the 8800gts drivers and setting my lcd to it's native 1440x900, the colors and text were blurry and stressfull. After research i found this http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...93&hl=1440x900
So i hope anyone else who finds this issue finds the link i posted.

I tested the system with:
AGP BFG 6800GS oc 16/6 @370/1050:
=======================
CS:S 1440x900 MAX AA2 = 112.42 fps
CS:S 1440x900 MAX AA4 = 102.90 fps
3Dmark06 = 3069

PCI-E x4 evga 8800gts sc
===================
CS:S 1440x900 MAX AA2 = 200.21 fps
CS:S 1440x900 MAX AA4 = 202.96 fps
CS:S 1440x900 MAX AA8 = 197.47 fps
3Dmark06 = 7818

I have an evga 680i mobo on its way. So once i get that installed i will update this thread with the similar tests to see what the card can do at 16x

That is a good score considering it is @ 4x only.
