This is very true. When I'm at work ultimately we use a Sunrise Telecom modem for determining ADSL speed. (I am an At&t service tech)

Not, to say that the speed test websites are worthless because we use them also.

But, for instance Comcast uses what they call speed boost. This is designed to kick in when dong a large download so the speed test sites may rate the speed in the 20mbps range. But, your way slower than that typically.
