Then just downclock it and see what happens. It wont hurt and you could always go back.

This is going to sound like a strange suggestion but disable you Alienware Desktop Profile, so that Stardock isn't running, and the try again.

Im not 100% sure so dont crucify me but you may have to flash them with the correct clock speeds you want in the vga cards bios. You chance messing something up since flashing isnt covered under warranty.

There's a slim chance that the Stardock program could've been conflicting with the NvidiaControl panel. I've had issues with an Nvidia card in the past with it running along with a couple of games, such as GTA San Andreas.

DO NOT FLASH THE CARDS!!!!
Not all of the apps support the proper clock stepping. I flashed one of mine to fan %100, and it downclocked the core to 614 from 620. No big deal, as that's still OCed for my reference card, but you may suffer a worse hit.

IMHO that isn't your problem. When you are running SLI it will run both cards at the same clock. I could be wrong, but from what I gather it will wait for the other card to complete the clock cycle to return data from the other GPU (after traveleing through the NB to the other card)

This is why I suggested he try downclocking the other card, it would be safest way to do it. I have seen in more than one place that the clocks should be the same for sli.

When in sli, when you overclock one it should take the other with it.
