Completely Baffled - Any ideas?

Thread Starter
I'm a n00b overclocker, but have been working and living with computers for some time so I know my way around (only laptops, thus no overclicking experience). I recently purchased myself a new rig (spec below) and was keen to try out the potential of the E6700. but when I tried to push the chip AT ALL it just wouldn't post!! Eventually, I found this guide, as it is exactly my MoBo and Bios, and changed the voltage settings as suggested. However, even now I can only get it stable at 3.2, and it won't post at anything past 3.35. My personal goal was 3.66, which I know to be possible with this chip, and don't understand where I'm going wrong!

SPEC:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (Rev 3.3)
DVD Drive Samsung SH-S183L DVD±RW/±R DL
Case - RaidMax Smilodon
Power Supply - Thermaltake TR2 500W
Ram - OCZ DDR2-800 1GB-DC Platinum rev.2
RAM fan - Thermaltake Cyclo
CPU Heatsink - Thermaltake V1
Graphics - I'm using an old GeForce 6200LE at the moment, getting a new 8600GTS in two weeks

Please help,
shmuls

Mobo - 70ish
CPU - 45 idle, 60 load
FSB - it's got a fixed 10x multipliers so default is 266, stable at 320, won't post past 335
RAM - Set memory multiplier to 2 (e.g. 1:1) as to avoid the memory strap probs
BIOS - Yes (I'm n00b, but not that n00b)

Any suggestions

70 ish? Holy crap. Did you try reseating the northbrige heatsink with some new thermal paste?

Could that be the problem? it's just the standard passive heatsink that came with the motherboard, I haven't touched it!
oh man, get those mobo temps taken care of, you arent going ANYWHERE if the northbridge is constantly passing out from heat exhaustion.

but it doesn't even post past 335, that can't be because of th heat, can it?

also I want to get something straight before I make too much of a fool out of myself. Speedfan shows system temp at 70ish, cores at 40ish (idle) and has another un-named temp at 55ish. System temp I assumed is MoBo temp, is that right?
Yes system temp will be the chipset.

And yes if the chipset is too hot it can hinder OC'ing and make the computer VERY unstable.

Try reseating it as suggested. And if that doesn't solve it we will find something else to blame

Everything else seems in check though to be honest.

Don't use Speedfan for Core architecture, use CoreTemp. Also is your PCI/AGP bus locked? PCI should be locked at 33.3 mhz and PCIe should always stay at 100 mhz. That is probably your problem.

CoreTemp saw my CPU at the same as speedfan (40-55ish) but CoreTemp doesn't show chipset temperatures, does it? If not, is there any program that does?

and I've set the PCIe to 100Mhz, but not sure how to set the PCI to 33.33Mhz on this MoBo, anyone used it and know how to do it?

I'll re-set the chipset heatsink with some AS5 on sunday and let you know how it goes...

Thanks,
shmuls
