New iMacs to have only cheap 8600GT?

There's been some rumors about the new iMac to be released sometime during August, but not much is known about the specs of the computer. With Macs getting more and more support from major game companies (EA, Epic, id Software, Blizzard), we should be expecting better graphic cards in the upcoming iMacs right?

What if the iMac ends up getting only a 8600GT (which sounds very possible) that wouldn't be able to run BF2142, UT3 and Starcraft 2 at full settings? Will the only option for Mac gamers be to go with a soon-to-be-updated MacPro?

I'm asking this because I'm studying in level design and would like to get a Mac in order to use Unity and I don't want to shell out over $3k to get a decent Mac...

the 8600GT is perfectly suited for playing any mainstream games...they're not out there to play at full settings...it's still better than any mainstream level computer you'd buy from a store....

Welcome to the wonderful world of Apple its too bad they have such a hard time keeping up with technology without the high price.
Can you run OS 10 on a regular PC i heard its possible to dual boot but i have no use for it altho i have friends who would love to do it if it was possible?

You can, but you need to have a CPU and a Graphic Card that is supported by either the iMac or the MacPro. Right now these cards are (if I remember correctly):

-x1600pro
-7300GT
-x1900XT (not sure about this one)
-8600m GT (the one in laptops, not sure if its supported yet)

Not much choice eh?

Not legaly, sorry :/

Anyway, currently Apple only includes x1600's and 7600 GT's in their iMacs, so it would make sense for them to keep using mid-range cards in the next gen. Also, remember that the iMacs are basicly laptops with a screen on the front, so they would have to use a mobile version of the graphics card, which would add cost.

However, it WOULD be nice to see an option for an 8800GTS on the 20"/24" models

There is a model of the x1900 series that is supported by MAC, I believe it is the GT. That is probally your best bet for a Mac video card ATM.

BTW 8600 seems an odd choice as mac's don't have directx? There are better cards for the price that aren't dx10 compliant.

Well, Apple already is using them in the MacBook Pro line, so I guess they like them.

Bootcamp = Windows Vista / XP dual booted on a Mac. It's even featured on Apple's website.

Macs will do everything PCs can, you just can't chose what you want to put in. Which is the major reason I'm hesitating to switch. I don't want to pay $2500+ for a MacPro with Xeon CPUs to get a decent GPU on a Mac.

What Apple is missing the most in it's product lineup is a midrange upgradeable tower.

Hm this is where everyone gets off at the wrong path. Apple is different technology compared to Windows. Apple is a optimize operating system for it's hardware but it can run other hardware like are PC's. It's not 100% going to be optimize like there approved hardware but does run on any other hardware.

Apple does charge alot but I Rather pay for a Optimize operating system compared to a compatible operating system if I known that everything would run alittle bit faster.

Also, you mite say. "well there is no 3dgames for mac". Here's why. People don't spend alot of money on macs because it's alot of money, but If we did alot of more Game writers would support it and everything would be more faster than Vista. Here are some games on Mac (CSS, CS1.6, Game with Wii Remote)
