Thermaltake V-1 Review

Heres just a little recap of this cooler...it looks awesome, for one, and it performs even better. Its pricey, at $65, but it really is a top notch cooler. Definitely, one of the best heatsinks I've owned or ever seen. With no further..a..adoo?..adeu?..Adew?..The Thermaltake V-1 CPU cooler

Have you ever seen a cooler like this? Thermaltake has taken a new approach to cooling with a stylish 100% copper cooler. The design is really unique, and should make for an awesome "show" as well as "go". It has 4 heatpipes that are in different shape to go with the cooler. This cooler is a great choice at $65.

I dont even know where to begin with this cooler. One set of fins is cooler by a middle fan, which sucks air from the back and through the fins. The other set is cooled by that same air being now pushed onto the other set of fins. It has an open top, which I assume is either for looks or to take in air aswell.

The base on this heatsink was extremely smooth, almost matching that of the 9700nt. Itwas very easy to mount and it used the pushpin method. I had an issue mounting it however. The motherboard lay on a motherboard case for the tests. Push pins stick through the back. See where I'm going with this? When I booted up core temp that was my first thought, "I've done something wrong". The cooler wasn't being pulled onto the chip hard enough and it wasn't making the greatest contact. Not the fault of the cooler I may add, since in a real case there is room behind the motherboard. When I applied slight pressure to the top of the cooler pushing downwards, the temps dropped more than 5c. So I ruled that it was the motherboard causing this problem, just thought I'd let you folks know. (PS. I mounted this cooler on my Opteron chip, and it came slightly ahead of my Zalman 9700nt by a degree or two)

I took a picture with the lights lower to show the LED awesomeness too.

PROS
# Looks great!
# Smooth base.
# Strong stock fan.
# Fan controller included.
# Easy mounting.
# 4 heatpipes.
# 100% copper.

CONS
# No fins on base.
# Loud fan. (Has fan controller)

Temps were taken on my e6300

Stock - 1800mhz - 1.325 volts
Idle- 31c
Load - 40c

3200mhz - 1.4 volts
Idle- 36c
Load - 46.5c

NOTE : Temps dropped to 42 ~ 43c when applying pressure on top of the heatsink.

would you mind putting it in an actual case so we can have a more realistic sense of the temperatures?

Picky one are we? Haha..sure..as soon as I get a case that it fits in . My e6300 rig is no longer able for review. My fun mess-around-with rig has a Sunbeam UFO case (see my signature). The cooler does not fit in it...so testing is tough!

The whole applying presure and reduce in temp seems like a flaw in the mounting

I dig the design of the V-1; as with some of TT's new line, they seem to be trying to build serious coolers (Spirit ram coolers and ND-1 come to mind ... both top-notch products)

...

If you could figure out a way to do away with the pushpins and get some serious high pressure mount action going, you'd shave another 3-5 degrees off of your results so far.

As with my current Infinity from Scythe, ... no company should build a great CPU cooler and then cripple it with piss-poor mounting.

I had to spend much time modifying my Infinity before I got it right.

Now, I don't want to switch, as I'm generally about 12C above ambient, with a high overclock, and nothing much else out there in the air cooler realm is *that* much better.

Moral of the story: V1 is probably top notch if you want to innovate and improve it's mounting system. And, ... frankly, it's visual design is awesome.

(mod it kopi; mod it!)

...

Keep up the good work, Kopi!

Thats sirrah, AMD and AM2 have the right idea for mounting, a simple bracket that flips...can't be beat!
