*squirm* well, that's a little misleading. Not often will you find a commercially-available 3D animation program being used "stock" as we call it for a movie. However, plenty of work is done in 3DS Max. Every Harry Potter movie (just an example) used 3DS Max for the gigantic, outside scenes. The CGI team developed tools that they could use in 3DS Max. This is very common.

I really like Pro|Engineer / Pro|Desktop. Pro|Desktop can be acquired for free via educational programs. Both are extremely technical, difficult to use without training. However, once you know how to use them, they are the best 3d CADD programs on the market. Pro|Engineer is very expensive.
