xbox dvd drive problem

Thread Starter
i have my friends xbox with me cause there is something wrong with it. it wont read the disks. it errors "cannot read disk". when i put the cd cleaner in, it read the disk, but it was slow, and VERY laggy. then i took the disk out and then looked thought the music and the speed went back to normal. is the buffer on the dvd drive dead? or is the driver of the drive corrupt. should i format the drive and put linux on it if its a driver problem?

I do not remember if you are able to do so but maybe replace the disc drive? I know you can do it with the HDD.
