Question about adding more RAM to my PC

Thread Starter
Hello,

I was just wondering if I have my facts straight here. I have 2x512MB stick of ram(which I believe is DDR, I read that 939 run only DDR, is this true?) and I plan on adding 1x1GB stick to give me a total of 2GB. Would this cause any problems if I just pop it in there? Would it make any noticeable difference if I got 2x1GB identical sticks of RAM or just add some more?

I also remember seeing that if you add RAM that the slower RAM will bottleneck the performance of the faster RAM.

My RAM operates at 200mhz(checked in BIOS) does that mean it is DDR400 RAM?

Sorry if these questions don't make too much sense, RAM speeds and such confuse me a little bit. But any/all help would be greatly appreciated

Hello.

Your S939 uses DDR RAM. It would be advisable to purchase 2 x 1GB sticks if you can.

I'm not sure what would happen if you tried 2 x 512MB, and 1 x 1GB... I don't think that you will be running in dual channel.

Getting 2 more sticks of 512MB for 4 x 512MB might be an option...

Ok, cool and thanks for the quick reply.

Here is what I plan to add to my PC.
3800+ X2 939
A total of 2GB Ram

If I get the 3800 + 2x512 sticks I am looking at about $140 shipped

If I get the 3800 + new heatsink fan + 2 x 1 GB sticks it is about $220 shipped

Now would option number 2(I would OC this one) be worth the extra $80? I will eventually also upgrade my PSU and my video card.

With option 2, you are getting an additional gig of ram compared to option 1. So the extra 80 bucks is about right.

I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear. In option 1 I would and 2x512MB of ram to my existing RAM for a total of 4x512MB.

Could you link the ram your looking at for both the 512x2 and the 1gbx2. Also what are you using as of now for memory?

^ 2x512 stix. I picked these just to match what I have now. Well at least I'm fairly sure that is what I have

Id deffinately pick option2. More oc head room I would think as g-skills are good to oc. In my opinion deffinately the better choice, as these amds are picky at running four dimms.

Ohh ok, my bad. I believe it would make o/c'ing easier and possibly get more out of it if the ram sticks were all the same. Also, running 4x512, I dont think you will be running in Dual Channel mode. Running 2x1gig sticks will let you run DC.

I would go with Option 2. That way you could also upgrade to 4gigs in the future without having to buy 4x1gig sticks at the same time.

Thanks for all your help guys I only have 1 more question for you. Should I also invest in a new PSU before I start OC'ing? And if so, what would be a good one to choose?
